    Paleng Gate, Kengtung...

The center of Kengtung is all old wall city. The wall and maybe a couple of the gates tis still mostly intact, although it is in disrepair and is overgrown in most places. (Not hard to spot it though, and you can follow it around most of the city if you are so inclined)

Of the old gates to the city, the one that is in the best shape is the Paleng Gate on the Southeast side of the city, just a minute or so away from the Princess Hotel.

    Maha Myat Muni temple
  • Tip Rating:
  • Or so called Phra Jao Luang temple. It located in the city center and stands as the most important temple of Kengtung. The interesting buildings 're viharn, it was built in 1926-1929 by Jao Rattanakonkaew-in-thalang,the city ruler of Kengtung. He was one respected by Kengtung people. Inside a big viharn housed the Buddha image named Maha Myat Muni, the most important and sacred for Kengtung.Maha Myat Muni image casted with gold ,bronze and silver. It was decorated in Burmese style. For dating,It was casted in 1920 by the city ruler. It took 4 years for making by the crafter named Saya U Tit and his company. It delivered to kengtung in 1927 before the finishing time of viharn. So this image must located in temporary hall nearby. Another interesting of this temple 're temple gates which decorated with stucco in Burmese style.

    Kengtung Hot Springs
  • Tip Rating:
  • A funny thing happened on the way to the hot springs...

Having some time to kill one morning, I decided to head out alone down to Kengtung hot springs, which is about 5 KM's south of town, on the road to Takchilek. So, being a cool morning, I decided to hoof it ... Almost there, I came across a miltary check point with lots of soldiers and lots of AK47 rifles being waved about.

it was obvious that they would like to know what my business was walking down the road alone, so, in every tongue known to me I tried to say: "Going to the hot springs": "Wo yao chui Wen-chwen.... '," Watashi wa on-sen e ikitai nan desu kedo..." Nan nun Un-chun e kagoshipoyo"...., etc. etc. etc. To no avail......

Suddenly, I have an Epiphany, if you will... I waved the gun toting soldiers all around me, and I drew a circle in the dirt, with three swiggly lines rising above them. (a well known symbol for hot springs) I then pulled my towel from my bag and gave them the cross the back drying off gesture....

Halelujah.... They all started to chatter: "lalalalalalalalalalalala" and nod their heads, and I was permitted to proceed to the hot springs without further delay....

Communication is indeed a wonderful thing...

I went to the central market every morning during my stay in Kengtung, mostly for people watching and taking pictures. It is really something to see all the various hill tribe people, dressed in their respective costumes just mingling and shopping in the market.... (Were not in Kansas anymore)

    Phra Kaew temple
  • Tip Rating:
  • Located in the heart of Kentung as one of three main temples. This temple was built in Burmese style around 1922 and finished in 1927 by Jao Rattanakonkeaw-in-thalang,the city ruler of Kengtung. It was renovated in WWII period by Thai artisans. Some interesting things 're Viharn where mixed between Thai Art and Burmese Art.Inside viharn, housed a group of Buddha images and the big one as the principal. On the wall of this viharn decorated with gold gilded painting on red wall. I've heard that this viharn combined with Mondop building as we can see from outside. On the roof of viharn also have a roof of Mondop(a high layered roof). Behind the viharn, located a pagoda on a high base.

    Visit the Akha tribes
  • Tip Rating:
  • Visit Ho Kyin village with Akha tribes, still
wearing traditional costumes with silver coils. If an Akhar woman wants
to dress up with her complete costume, it will take about more than one hour.
Having immigrated from Chinas Yunnan province about 200 years ago, the majority of Akha-tribes settles now in Thailand, but about one third is situated in Laos and Burma`s "Golden Triangle", near the Thai- and Chinese border.

    Lake on Lwe Mwe
  • Tip Rating:
  • This lake use as resevoir for army and villagers on Lwe Mwe.I visited there on a cloudy and rainy day,so the scenery was a bit gloomy and foggy. But I enjoyed there. At the center of lake, the Burmese army was built a colourful zigzag wooden bridge as you can see in the pictures.

Getting to Kengtung, in the center of Myanmars Shan-State, is spectacular. By air, the plane flies over an endless series of green mountains and river gorges, interspersed with cultivated fields and small towns and villages. Around the "city" of Kengtung there are various villages of the ethnical minorities, the so called "hill-tribes" within a distance of about one driving hour, plus some steep hiking.
You may visit the village of Pintauk with its Lahu tribes, Yan Law Village with Khun tribes, Wan Pauk
village with Red Palaung Tribes. People are friendly, but one has to adapt to the somewhat different hygiene-standards.You may be offered a drink of local booze by the village-headman; it may be a new and different experience, but NEVER decline to take it !
