Zayatkyi Things to Do

  • Another angle of the loom

These ladies were all sychronised with working their feet and adding all of the threads to make the beautiful patterns without making mistakes! I was amazed! I would've messed up in the first 3 seconds!

  • Working the loom

I love the clicking sound that the looms in the big room made as the ladies worked in the same traditions of times gone by. They were so intune with what they were doing! Sadly their pay is very, very low.

  • Intricate weaves

Some of the designs that were done on the looms were very intricate and so beautiful. Some of the designs took 2 ladies more than a week to make enough fabric for one longyi!

Zayatkyi Transportation

  • Take the Off Ramp

If you are in the main lane of the canal and want to head down the smaller side canals you'll have to get in the off ramp lane!

  • Parking lot

To get between the small villages all of the locals own one of these small canoes. It would be fairly easy to find someone to take you around for a very cheap price. This house here must've been a house for workers or a house the a couple of families lived in. No cars in the parking lot here! Didn't see any Valet service either.

There are a few different shops that are only accessable by boat. You will be taken to one of them if you hire a boat from Naungshwe. No pressure to buy anything and they are very willing to bargain. This picture is the silver shop that we stopped at. They also have silversmiths working inside for you to watch the process. You could also call it a...

  • Blacksmithing

These 5 guys were swinging those big hammers so fast that the process sounded like a machine! On a sad note I did notice that there were young boys that looked like they were my sons age (12) that were were working right along with the men. I know that they need money to help support their families but it would be nice if they had a chance for an...

  • Blacksmith

It was very cool to watch a hunk of metal being pounded on by 5 guys that were all in synch with each other pounding away on the Red Hot hunk of steel! And of course they were barefoot with bits of the molten metal falling onto their feet! OUCH! I don't think that their footware would pass OSHA standards here in the west.

  • Weed Gathering

All over the lake you can see weed gatherers. It is used to build floating gardens and also to add to the size of the property. It also serves a double pupose of keeping the boating lanes clear of motor tangling weeds!

The whole area of the lake is so fantastic!! Cruising this quiet streets in our boat was simply beautiful. I had a hard time not taking a photo every 2 seconds.

  • Boat builders of Pwezagon

These guys were using the big saw cutting these big timbers by hand. It looked like very hard work. One guy pulled from the top while the other guy pushed from the bottom. Whew!!Building a boat is quite a process as everything is done with hand tools!

These guys are bringing some Green Bamboo to build the floating gardens. These long pieces are used to stabilize the gardens. One the guys is rowing in the Inle Lake style while the other is paddling with his arms.

  • Floating Gardens

These floating gardens are over about 20 feet of water. When I was told that I asked my boat driver "Really"? He knew that I thought he was stretching the truth so he took one of his 12 foot long oars and stuck it into the lake all the way up to his shoulder. And he didn't touch bottom! Ok, I believe you now! hahaIn my picture you can see the...
