Kandawgyi Park and Lake, Rangoon

If the bustle of downtown Yangon is getting to you, you may want to go for a relaxing stroll in the park. the park in question is Kandawgyi, which literally translates as Royal Lake. There are plenty of shaded areas and it is very relaxing.

The centrepiece of the park is the large Karaweik (Royal Barge). This is not an ancient monument, but a modern construction which houses a function hall amongst other things. Please see seperate tips entitled Karaweik.

As well as the Karaweik, there is a small childrens zoo and play area, and various food outlets.

The park also serves as a venue for pop concerts at the weekend, although I was advised locally that these can get a bit out of control later in the day when the drink has been flowing for a while. The photo shows the barbed wire preparations for one such event.

Somewhat incongruously, I also spotted a fully camouflaged tank nestling amonst the bushes, and less martially, there is a bevy of black swans on the lake - very beautiful.

I was impressed by the expansive acres of land that are transformed into public parks. Nevertheless none of them lies in the very centre of the town (which reflects in a chaotic atmosphere). From Shwedagon and onwards beautiful public parks are there for people to have their pic nics or have a leisure walk.
Due to limited time, we left our last day in Myanmar to have a leisure walk in Kandawgyi lake park which is close to Shwedagon pagoda. The area is very tranquil and well maintained, with a big wooden bridge to cross around. It's a perfect place to have a glimpse of everyday life specially on weekends: families, couples all scrolling around.
There are numerous sights in the lake area plus the upmarket Kandawgyi hotel which I have to recommend just for its tranquil gardens.

To be frank i didn't go inside but it looked really grand from outside.
One shd try it if there is time.
