Yangon to Inle

by seagypsy

I've taken the bus from the north bus station (north of the airport) and there are several agencies that have buses departing in the early afternoon. It's a grueling bus-ride so I'd recommend bringing some snacks eventhough you'll stop at some point for dinner. Don't drink too much water/beverages and use the facilities whether it's a bus stop or the side of the road whenever you can. I've been dropped off at Kalaw at 4am, 5am and 6am and it's another hour or so to Shwenyaung junction where you transfer to a songthaew or taxi down to the town of Nyaungshwe for Inle Lake.I think you can still book the bus at the bus agencies near the Yangon train station and they may even include a free trip to the north bus station.

Ride the Sampan to the other side

by herzog63

There are Sampans that leave from many of the docks going to the towns on the other side of the river at different intervals all through the day. They are very inexpensive to ride. I missed my opportunity to ride in one but I will do it if I ever make it back to Yangon for sure! You better make sure you know how to swim!! The river has quite a current to it and I didn't see any life saving equipment in the sampans that I looked into!!

Old boat - New Ship

by herzog63

Here you can see how the locals get around the immediate area with the small boats while the big new River Ship in the background awaits passengers to take them up country. For some reason we didn't make the time to take one of the cross-river boats to Dalah...I had thought about doing it but it never happened. I love to watch life as it happens on and around a big river like the Ayerwaddy!

Saiq-ka....Side Car

by herzog63

If you want an interesting experience of a slower pace hire a Saiq-ka to drive you around. Many of these guys are willing to work by the hour or by the day. It will be best to negotiate before getting in though to avoid any problems when it comes time to pay. The Saiq-ka is made for the driver that rides the bike and then there is space for 2 passengers. The sit with their backs to each other. So if there are two of you it's hard to have a conversation without getting a stiff neck!! LOL These guys are found everywhere. They didn' t appear to be very pushy like in some countries where they hound you to death...sometimes they would just say ..."Saiq-ka sir"? as we passed.

Ride the Bus

by herzog63

Well to get around the city there appeared to be an extensive bus system...I didn't get the chance to give it a try...The couple of times that we were gonna try turned out to be misses. The buses were packed to capacity +20 LOL There was no way I could feel comfortable packing my son into one of those. If I was alone I'd be jumping on just for the fun of it!! LOL Not even knowing or caring where I was going! I do know that if you do learn the system it is a very, very cheap way to get around!! Just pennies!!
