Money

by amansfield

We were very concerned before going to Cambodia in Jan 06 as we had read that there were no ATMs and as such took American Dollars. By the time we arrived there had been some ATMS installed in Phnom Penh and Siem Riep. There is really no need to get Cambodian currency as everything is done in US dollars and you will really only get Cambodian currency as change (ie US 50c change will come back in local currency)

Siem Reap Town

by muddybok

Only small portion of Siem Reap residents benefited from tourism, majority of them still have carry on with their lives by other means. This is a regular market/street scene outside of Angkor Wat Archeological Park.Strange thing in Siem Reap where riders and pillion riders need not to wear crash helmet in the town or Angkor Archeological Park, but when they hit on highway #6 & #1, they will require to wear one. This may attribute to high mortality rate on these 2 highways.Do insist for one crash helmet if you engage the rider service. If you worry about the hygiene of the helmet, we cover your hair with cap or scarf before putting the helmet on.

Jigsaw Puzzled?!?!!!

by muddybok

Some of this dug ups are not yet identified to be attached to any part of the temple yet. It's like a jigsaw puzzle set with all the heavy pieces. Can't wait for puzzle to be solved!Anyway, every piece is labeled with some form of labeling system? Wonder I can make some computer sales over there?Anyway, not too worry because they have some systematic way of recording those pieces and may they just waiting to find some connecting pieces before finally putting them up.

Sunset @Phnom Bakheng

by muddybok

Phnom Bakheng offers panoramic views of Angkor Wat, Angkor Thum and the surrounding areas. It is best visited in the late afternoon for a spectacular sunset.Remember to check out my Packing List Tips for some essentials before you're to visit Phnom Bakheng for sunset. Please note that you're here to see sunset & not sunbathing. I see a lot of people got up to the top very early in order to get a nice spot. But, they all looks toasted before the sun starting to set.

Medicine man

by muddybok

This is also a regular scene in 3rd world country where majority of the people still believe in traditional/herbal medicines. The medicine man will normally perform some stunts by deliberately hurting himself with boiling oils or sharp object. And after the acts, they will apply whatever products that he is promoting to show rapid recovery of the wounds.Guys, please do not perform the stunt at home because these guys are highly trained with skills to promote their medicines.

Wee flower

by muddybok

Sorry for divert your attention from all the solid old ruins to this tiny flower. I found this particular flower grow in between pave stones leading to Preah Ko's towers. And the soil is dusty and really dry, and the wee flower just grown out between the pave stones. It reminded me of Cambodian live under extreme poverty, yet their dignity still very much intact (minus the Khmer Rouge part).

Excellent Tour Agency

by codyukie

We have decided to engage a Cambodian tour guide prior to our trip at Siem Reap. After reading some good reviews for Amazing Angkor company, we emailed to engage Panha's service to show us around. Initially we were having some reserves as we have no idea what to expect from their local agency service. Afterall, it was our first time to Cambodia. After our 5days trip I must say that Panha is a very good and responsible tour guide that has our interests in mind. He would advise according to our interest and provide us the best. We had no worries, as we leave everything to him to plan. All we need were to request and he would try his best to arrange to our satisfaction. Thumb up for his service and hope he excel in his charitable projects.Tour Guide, Panha Ou: +855-12-820570Website: www.amazingangkor.com

Money

by maffustan

Cambodia uses its own money the Riel as well as the US dollar. There are 4000 Riel to the dollar so if you pay for 75 cent bottle of water with a dollar note you get 1000 Riel change. Sounds strange at first but you soon get used to it. Dollar notes must not be torn otherwise no-one will accept them. On the other hand some of the Riel notes in circulation look like they date back to when Ankor wat was built and have the feel of toilet paper.

A book to read

by turnip2000

"Off the Rails in Phnom Penh" — Guns. Girls and Ganja by Amit Gilboa is a repellent but popular book dealing with such murky subjects as prostitution and the like. It gives you a good insight into the seedier side of the country and how foreigners use the poverty to their advantage.

culture shock in Cambodia

by econdra1

north-east Ratanakiri province, situated in the mountaneous, rain-forest region of Cambodia- a hardly known area which is actually one of the most interesting parts of the country Last year I spent three weeks of my summer holidays in a South-East Asia country. I had made team with a group of Belgian travellers gathered collectively towards the goal of exploring Cambodia. A belgian travel operator ('Joker') proposed this journey, with modalities supposedly to be accepted upon enrolling (plane and local transportation costs, a largely worked-out daiy schedule, hotel bookings...)I had a really nice stay overall speaking : I enjoyed the trip and the cotravellers.During my stay one feature of the Cambodians' daily life really called my attention so that I came to reflect upon my own 'cultural going-about' being a West European person. The question appeared to be how, or more properly put,...
