Watching people harvesting "?" at sundown

by lemondrop

Riding by a pond in the late afternoon, I noticed a group of people out in the water. I stopped and sat near the shore to watch. They seemed to be gathering some type of underwater vegetation. It was sort of relaxing watch them slowly move around in the water in the light of the sinking sun.

Poverty

by muddybok

Average Cambodian will live & grow up with this kind of setting. Poverty is a norm to most households. I don't know whether these houses do not have piping facilities or they're try to save water bill. One thing for sure is not many of us can really use to these kind of scenes and certainly not something that we can live with.I going to zoom into next picture to see some of the activities happening on this seem much polluted river.

Phnom Penh aerobics

by mad4travel

This was happening outside our hotel every morning from about 5am (still dark) til 6.30.Maybe in the past they all did Tai Chi but now its aerobics. Short of the leotards and leg warmers, they all looked like the kids from fame. This piccie was taken shortly after they finished when lots of street vendors turned up to sell them breakfast

Cambodian Petrol Station

by mad4travel

God knows what the Health and Safety people in the west would make of this. A typical cambodian Gas station - petrol in bottles in the sun by the roadside. They are everywhere, but very handy when your scooter runs low!Standing next to it talking to your mates with a lit cigarette does to seem to be a problem sither!

Make the children smile

by chrissycat

There will be many, many children trying to sell you souvenirs, if you do not wish to buy anything from them, don't lead them on or tell them that you will be coming back later. Instead of buying something from these kids, you can always give them something in return like sweets, stickers or some colour pencils, these kids would be grateful for anything you give them and it would probably make their day happier too.

Dusty roads

by chrissycat

The streets can get pretty dusty, if you have sensitive eyes, always remember to put on your sunglasses to prevent some dusts getting into yr eyes and shading them from the glaring afternoon sun, at the same time, you can look cool =)

A monkey eating a banana!

While not the number one highlight of my trip, I must say that this really does rank up there with the big ones. A monkey eating a banana, I thought that only happened in cartoons and I have imortalized it here forever.

Some Useful Phrases

by i-s-a

Going to another country, it is important for a visitor to know a few local words and phrases. In Cambodia (at least in Siem Reap), a lot of people speak English due to the influx of tourists but still a lot of people don't. Saying "thank you" and "hello" in Khmer goes a long way. The locals appreciate you more for trying. They become more friendly and helpful too. Try these simple words and have fun!GREETINGSSusady - Hello.Swakum - Welcome. CIVILITIES Orkun - Thank you.Suksabyte - How are you? Above words are thought to us by our taxi driver Pov. I remember him to be a curious person and interested to learn a lot of things. He would ask me a lot of English and Filipino words and would request those to be explained to him. In return he teached us a few Khmer words.

Angkor temples

by sachara

Most visitors come to Cambodia to visit the temples of Angkor. Siem Reap is the gateway to the Angkor temples. The famous temples Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom are within a distance of 10 km north from the town.. Most temples are open from sunrise until sunset. A one-day pass costs 20$ and a 2-3 days pass costs 40$ (ID-picture needed). These passes can be bought at the checkpoints on your way to the temples.Angkor became an UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993. Archaeologists from all over the world are working on the restoration of the temples. Also the Cambodian government is activily involved in protecting the monuments and promoting the region. The Angkor temples rise literally out of the jungle. The most striking was my visit to Ta Prohm, the ´jungletemple´, showing the struggle between the giant trees of the jungle and the ancient constructions, which gave any idea how the Angkor area...

Ocean of milk

by Pierangelo

A long time go, both gods and demons had been weakened by the failiure of Amrita and some other precious things to reappear after the recreation of the universe. The gods decided that they would need the demons in order to help in the churning of the ocean of milk, which would bring forth these treasures. They offered them an equal share of the Amrita, though they could never afford to give the demons the strength provided by the Amrita, which would have made them even stronger than the gods. The demons agreed to the proposal and first helped the gods to tear up the Mount Madura for use as a churning stick. The serpent Vasuki was brought from his underwater abode to be used as a churning rope. Trough a trick of Vishnu, the gods took the tail end and the demons pulled from the head. As the churning progressed, Vasuki's breath grew very hot and the demons almost suffocated. When the serpent...
