If I were You.....

by skydivefred

..... I wouldn't trust either the police or the medical centers !!! Check out the photo !!!!However, in Siem Reap for instance, the touristic police is present and efficient because they don't want the tourist $$$$ to go away from them because of robbery or hassle. I guess you can trust them there !!

Treating the people with dignity

by Maximilian21

One strong lesson i learnt was from one of my motorcycle drivers in Phnom Penh. His name was John and he told me how he resented being treated so cheaply by westerers. I didnt know what he meant but then i soon understood. treating someone well is not just about smiling at them and shaking there hand, its also about not belittling them in there finances. Its a common practice to barter of course, but when its your livelyhood its a bit different. Paying a driver for a day is often a minimal fee for a tourist, say $10. To the driver it means a lot. Some people wish to lower the price of the ride considerably, sure the driver will probabaly agree, but its only because hes desperate and may not get any other opportunities in the day. Whats a few dollars anyway. i often think that working at a guesthouse would be torture for them. they often see these young people come in who have never...

Cambodia People

by Maximilian21

The people of Cambodia are outstanding. Very firndly and love there stories. They always greet you with a smile and a warm handshake but you know that there is a sadness that lies just beneath the surface. These people have been through so much tragedy and to keep pushing on with a smile is a testament to the strength of the human spirit

Poverty

by Maximilian21

Unfortnetely Cambodia is a very poor country. It will stare in the face almost immediately at you cross the border into the country. Mnay people beg for money and food and you also see a lot of victims from land mines and other atrocities commited by the khmer rouge.

Overcrowded everything

by Maximilian21

Like in Laos, dont expect to ever see a vacant seat on a boat or bus you might be travelling on. They make sure to do there best to pack everyone as good as possible before they send you off on your way with a big smile.

Passing through Immigration at the Poipet Border

by Maximilian21

Getting the visa was easy but i would have to say that this was a nightmare. I am not prone to complaining ,particiulalrly on my travels but i did not like this border experience. It was a sunday and many people wanted to pass through tye border into cambodia. Mostly locals. For us small bunch of foreiners we where made to wait in the passport check room for about 2 hours. There would have had to have been 200 people in this room with only one working fan. It would have had to be close to 50 degrees in this room. When we got out we where made to wait a further hour while waiting for our "vip" bus to Siem Reap. So when you go overland, expect to wait a little while

Visa on arrival

by Maximilian21

It is very easy to get a visa on border arrival in cambodia. All you need to bring with you is $30, 2 passport photos and you should be sweet. When you get to the border town of aranthapray they ususally organise it there for you. Getting the visa should not be a problem privided you passport of sweet.

Traveller's Diarrhea?

by batgirl1001

What do you do if you get diarrhea? Hmm.....since I had one when I was in Cambodia....I can tell you it ain't thrilling. The best course of action is it seems, not to eat anything for about 24 hours and let it run its course.Anyway, with all the nausea, vormitting and diarrhea who can eat anything right? My doctor in Phnom Penh recommended that and also to drink Coke during my illness. Why? It seems Coke contains a lot of essential sodium, potassium, salt and minerals lost during your diarrhea bout. So even if you don't eat, you still need to rehydrate yourself. So drink Coke. No this is not an advert for Coke but rather for a sensible cure for the ailment. Otherwise, there is no thrill going around Cambodia looking for a toilet all the time.

Sick or need Medical Help in Phnom Penh?

by batgirl1001

If you are sick in Phnom Penh and need medical attention, there is no better place in Cambodia to get it.There are many 24-hour clinics or hospitals that can handle routine medical treatment. I for one went to Naga Clinic which charged me $50 for an afterhours consultation. Internatioanal SOS wanted $100.Naga Clinic accepts only cash so you better be prepared. However it practices western and general standards of medication and will prescribed the best (and most expensive)Cost me $100 in all but thankfully I have travel insurance. Thus TRAVEL INSURANCE. ALWAYS GET IT. YOU NEVER KNOW....Anyway Naga Clinic also has an office in Siem Reap and the doctor told me, is the only acceptable clinic in Siem Reap which practices western general standard medicine.

Sick or need medical help in Sihanoukville?

by batgirl1001

I got food poisoning while in Sihanoukville and had to seek medical attention. The only doctor worth considering in Sihanoukville is Angkor Clinic, Dr Mao.Unfortunately there was a miscommunication problem at first. The reception refer to him as "Chinese doctor practicing Chinese medicine".Which means to me and many Asian people, is that he is a Chinese doctor who practices traditional Chinese medicine....you know...herbs and yucky stuff.Instead what they meant to say is he is a Chinese doctor period. And he practices standard western medicine and has a good standard of sanitation and hygiene. If ever you are sick in Sihanoukville, he is the person to go and it would not be expensive too. My medication and 2 injections cost me $15.
