Bokor Hill Station was constructed in 1921 on Damrei Mountains, 40 kms from Kampot by the French. This was a place to escape the heat of Phnom Penh and it was truly grand in its day with the Bokor Park Palace Hotel and Casino, shops, post office, church and royal apartments. Nearly one thousand people died while the construction took place, but it became a ghost town as the French departed in the late 1940's. The building remains today but in a state of decay, as well as a few other buildings. In 1972 the Khmer Rouge took over the place and there was heavy fighting as the KR held on against the Vietnamese. It remained a stronghold of the KR until 1990.
Around 10 kms before you arrive at Bokor ruins you will find a derelict summer palace (the Black Palace) where King Sihanouk used to stay. From this location there is an excellent view over the surrounding countryside, and you can even see as far as the ocean.
The ruins have been the scene of two movies.

    Bokor National Park

by mikegr Updated Jan 3, 2005

This is a wonderful NP which really deserves an over night stop.

The highlights in the national park are the deserted remains of the resort buildings which were ruined by the Khmer Rouge when they came to power - the church, the casino and most dramatically the Bokor Hotel (pictured) perched on the hill overlooking the other buildings.

It is very easy to find guides in Kampot City to take you up the mountain - they will approach you.

Ask for Sa Rith at the market - he was a wonderful guide!

Explore Bokor By Night - not for the faint-hearted

Staying the night in Bokor National Park will allow you to explore the ruins by flashlight - straight out of a horror movie. Watch out for jokers in your party who will no doubt take the opportunity to sneak off and try to scare you witless!

We spent a long time wandering from room to room, at night, with our torches switched off. In hindsight this was probably really stupid, as there are plenty of places where we could have had an accident. On the other hand the "scare factor" was unbelievable.

Think you've seen a scarey movie recently?

You don't know what scared is.........
