Drinking at the Festival

Favorite thing: On one of our roadtrips in search of schools to give the childrenbooks to, we drove through a village called Kachon. All the people of the village seemed to be gathered on a large open area somewhere in the center. It was clear that there was some sort of festival going on.

My partner decided to look for the schoolprincipal or a teacher, I decided to take seat next to a few women who were sitting on a dead tree. I smiled at the women, and it immediatly seemed to break the ice (if there was ever any). They all came towards me and surrounded me, asking me all kinds of questions I didn't understand. In my little learned khmer I asked a few questions back, and tried to understand what they were saying. Many of them seemed to be drunk, but they all seemed to have fun and get along with each other.

The festival had a lot of music, traditional dance and ricewine from barrel. It was great to have experienced the happy faces of the women when I would say something in Khmer.

Bringing Books Along

Crowd around the Books

Fondest memory: From a Phnom Penh based NGO called "Save Cambodia's Wildlife" we brought many childrenbooks and educational posters along on our trip to Ratanakiri. The books all had a message dealing with taking care of, and saving the wildlife that is still left in Cambodia.

My partner and I brought these to the local schools. While he explained the children and the teachers the purpose of the books I took pictures for documentation. This was an incredible experience, and a chance to see what little the schools have and how much there still needs to be done in terms of education. Some schools had never had books or very little, and children were very excited to get these colorful picturebooks for their school.
