Seeking Solace in Siem Reap

by arianne_1504

It's too hard to have one favourite! The people, the food, the countryside, the temples, the experience.... The whole experience was not to be missed. But I guess what hit me most about Cambodia was the way the people dealt with their lot in life - it bothers them but they don't see the point in letting the anger consume them. Certainly makes me think every time something upsets me because I really don't have any worries at all.

Taste the Local Flavor - Seafood-Noodle Omelet

by i-s-a

..What I like about eating in SR is that all meals include a FREE serving of fresh fruits in season...like pineapples and watermelon. It's true for both high-end restaurants and budget-friendly eateries. ..I've tried it from one of the local restaurants and it tasted really good...fresh ingredients and big serving. And as I am very forgetful...I forgot the name of the shop. Will try to get the name and share with you.

Taste the Local Flavor - Amok

by i-s-a

..While researching about Cambodia, one traveller kept on mentioning Amok...Fish Amok, Pork Amok, Chicken Amok...everything Amok....he can't seem to get enough of it. So I told myself to try the dish when I get the chance.I found out that this Cambodian dish is very similar to Thai Curry. It is delicious.Enjoy eating!

Taste the Local Flavor - Soup Cow / Cow Soup ???

by i-s-a

..Last night of our stay and our new friend Pov treat us with a special dinner. Yes...he is our cab driver...the best ^o^. When asked for the name of the dish, he said "Soup Cow". We pressed for more and asked for the Cambodiam name, he said "Cow Soup". Hahaha now we understand. He said that a lot of Cambodian ladies seem to prefer that dish so he was hoping that we would like it too. He brought us to a food stall at the New Market. many locals eat there so we know we are in for a delicious meal.Cow Soup is like a hot pot meal. The gas stove with boiling pot of broth will be served on your table together with a plate of beef strips, raw egg, veggies, noodles and condiments. All you have to do is to drop all the ingredients and put salt and sugar to taste. It is one of the most filling and delicious meal that I had in Cambodia.

Hospitals in Siem Reap-our experience

by tedandtina

This is not our favorite thing about Siem Reap, but is is definitely a memorable one....Our child fell ill on the first day of going to Siem Reap-food poisoning-the likely cause..Just a general tip- carry your travel insurance policy with you if you have it.The facilities are not that great so brace yourself if need be.And for a 4 hour stay, IV (saline) consult and anti nausea meds it was 150 US$ FYI Of him getting better afterwards..and smiling .that is one of our fondest memories...

Siem Reap Trip

by hass74

Visited Cambodia from 11 to 16 Mar 2007. Got a very good driver - Charlie Chan. Thanks to a VT member that recommended him. Fortunately he lives some 5 minutes away from our guesthouse. Our guesthouse Bou Savy Guesthouse was a really homely place. We felt very comfortable staying there & the service was friendly. Thanks to Mr Horn Bovuth. You can email them at savy7777@hotmail.comCharlie was with us ( 4 guys travelling together) for 3 days. He took us to see the ruins of Angkor Wat & the surrounding areas. Even took us to Beng Meala, about an hour drive from SR. He was also our guide - explaining abt the temple ruins. While with him, he suggested the itinerary for us. Got to see Angkor Wat at night. A company was a company function and booked the place. It was a marvellous sight! Took us also to the landmine museum near Angkor & showed us ard SR. Truly a great friend & guide! If you wish...

My Second Trip To Siem Reap - Day 2

by mizzzthanggg

Day 2iii) Beng Mealea - u can visit this with Kbal Spean and Phnom Kulen or Banteay Srei but it'll be a loonnggg daytrip. This i think is my favourite place! Much more Lara Croft then Ta Prohm because there's very little restoration done and you can see how completely overcome by nature it is! U feel like a real adventurer climbing all over the stones and through the tunnels, but wear comfy pants!! And be prepared to slide and get moss all over your butt.iv) Preah Khan - this is quite a big temple, also very much in the style of Ta Prohm but better condition, with a sculpture that had Roman pillars etc. which was cryptic, noone really knows why it's there. We were late to leave for here, if we had a very quick lunch we could've combined Preah Khan with Neak Pean and Ta Som (called The Grand Tour since it's furthest north of Angkor).v) Every Saturday there's a free 7.15p.m. Cello Concert...

My Second Trip To Siem Reap - Day 3

by mizzzthanggg

Day 3vi) We did Balloon Angkor for sunrise! Which i wanted to do since my first trip. This is a 15-min hot air balloon ride (US$15 each) at sunrise (leave hotel at 5 a.m. but u'd be surprised to see how many people go out to the temples for this). We checked in at 5.48 because sunrise was at 5.57, they were bang on time! Very romantic and u can see buffalos in the fields bathing and stuff... nice!vii) Quick speed through Angkor Wat - since we'd seen it before... again didn't manage to do proper Bas Relief storyline walk because was TOO hungry! Tip: Bring some snacks if you're going to do the sunrise thing!viii) Psaa Leu Market (much more localised then the touristy Psaa Chaa, make sure u pass by the meat section for sights of peeled frogs, pigheads in all their glory, mashed fish guts, sausages hanging, squashed ducks and poultry, seeing chickens squawking and being slaughtered and even...
