My Second Trip To Siem Reap - Day 1

by mizzzthanggg

This time round i think i had a much more satisfying trip, maybe cos i was more familiar with the orientations and i took time to read the guidebooks properly to understand how the temples were grouped, etc. Plus i had a great, laid-back travel buddy so no rushing or wanting to see everything in one day. This is important, of course if it's your first trip, you will feel like you must stuff as much in as possible! This time we bought a 3-day Pass (US$40, need photo but can take there instantly for free). This gave us the chance to visit the temples and sites further out of the city, so much less crowded and a lot more undiscovered, so much better! And it felt more Lara Crofty since we were most of the time by ourselves and made sure we went the opposite direction from others! We went to:Day 1 i) Kbal Spean - this site means "Wellhead Rock". You go through jungles and dried riverbed trails...

My First Trip To Siem Reap

by mizzzthanggg

Of course we had to take in all the most famous places. So this trip as we were in a hurry (only had 3 days before moving down to Phnom Penh), we visited all the main, popular tourist must-see temples:i) Phnom Bakheng for sunset on the eve (a US$20 1-day Pass bought after 5 p.m. allows u to enjoy this and the ticket will be valid the next day too);ii) Angkor Wat iii) Ta Prohm (yes... that Lara Croft one); iv) Bayon (with the thousand faces of Buddha/Jayavarnam VII, essentially the "Donald Trump" of Ancient Angkor 'cos he was responsible for the building of all these huge megastructures). All these temples are pretty crowded. For a break we went to the floating village on the Tonle Sap lake the next day. After that we were off to Phnom Penh.Pix up soon!

Go for the fast internet service!

by thedouglas

There are plenty of internet cafes in Siem Reap - and we tried several of them. The faster services were twice the price - but, just that, faster, and you ended up needing at least half the time, and did away with the frustration of the time spent trying to achieve anything with the slower services.

Landmines Museum

by mary2u99

Do ask your driver to take you to the landmines museum. It is worth the trip. So many children with lost hands, legs etc.. its very sad to see them. The good thing is these children are so friendly and want to talk to the tourist.

Make sure you have crisp US currency for SR

by thedouglas

We had so many problems with the acceptability of the US$ we took to Cambodia. We bought this currency at the bank in Australia before leaving, to be organised, but notes were often rejected in shops. The staff would closely examine the money, frown and say "old money - no good". We ended up just walking out, as all of our money was in the same condition. It was quite easy to get money in Siem Reap, and there was no problem with the "condition" of the notes given there. Needless to say, the kids and the food outlets at the temples, and the market sellers had no problem with our money.

Drinking Water

by woosoowei

Buying bottled mineral water is the daily shopping you will do when visiting temples under the hot sun. Please ask your driver/ guide to buy them on your behalf. Why? Suprisingly it is 50% automatic off the price. If u buy yourself (tourist vs local price meh... :) USD1 for 1 bottle for tourist but for the locals is USD1 for 2 bottles 1.5LHappy drinking..

Currency & Money

by woosoowei

Cambodian does not accept any coins, only notes accepted. I have brought some US coins left over from my last trip elsewhere and wanted to use them at Siem Reap, avoiding the use of cambodian riel but unsussesful. Minimum note accepted is USD1. Whatever lesser will be returned using Riel. (March 2006, USD1 = 4000 - 4200 Riel). The lesson is: save your effort to bring the heavy coins... :(

Well, if happened you 're here(Bayon), don't forget to go down to this path way where you will find this little secret not everyone knows about. From the two picture you will notice that one is fulled with sun light while the other is sheltered.Take a good look and you will notice the pillars are so, so straight and well in order.

"Traineras" - Boat Festival

by elpariente

Al igual que en Phnom Penh aquí tuvimos la suerte de coincidir con la última luna llena de noviembre que es cuando se celebran las carreras de botes , eliminándose dos a dos , hasta que llegan a la finalAl ser más pequeño el río se viven más de cerca las carreras y toda la vida que se desarolla a su alrededorIn the same way as phnom penh we had the luck to stay the last November full moon that is when they celebrate the boat race, eliminating two by two up to reach the finalAs it has a smaller river you live more intensively the races and all the live that is around it
