Getting a Visa

by trisanna

Mostly everyone will need a visa to enter Cambodia. For most nationalities it's visa on arrival. Visas on arrival are available at Phnom Pehn and Siem Reap airports. $20USD for a normal visa, $25 USD for a work visa. Makes sure you have passport photos with you. You will also need an extra one to get the temple pass, which covers admission to Angkor Wat, etc. If you are coming overland from Thailand by Poipet or Koh Kong you will have to get a visa in Bangkok ahead of time. Same goes with people entering from Vietnam. In Singapore, you can get your visa either on arrival if flying into Cambodia or go to the Cambodian Embassy. Which is located on Beach Road at the Gateway Buildings. For a few extra dollars, they will do the visa on the spot. To extend the visa: They are granted in Phnom Pehn by the Direction des Etrangers, which is located at the Ministry of Information. Located on Phlauv...

Currency

by Tina-Perth

The best currency to enter Cambodia with is US$. You will receive your change in riel. There are 4,000 riel to US$1.00. Although we were told that Thai baht could be used in Cambodia, it is not advisable. You can use it, but it is much better to use US$ or riel. Thai coins are not accepted at all. There are no ATM's and banks are few and far between. I would not advise using credit cards unless in a hotel, I don't think smaller places will accept them anyway.

Cambodia's children

by grahamopey

When they aren't working (and even when they are) the children knocking around Siem Reap are some of the nicest you will meet. The picture shows a group of Children I met cutting grass around the back of one of the rolous group temples, ok so the pic cost me $1 but I still had a nice little chat with them.On another occassion I was greatly moved when three young children shot up from there family group, sitting by the banks of the river through the town, and presented me with a small bunch of freshly picked flowers.Be nice to them, even the one's mithering you around the temples. They all have great character.

pay dirt for the intrepid traveler

by richiecdisc

Pretty much everyone that goes to Cambodia makes the trek to Angkor Wat. It has become Southeast Asia’s main tourist draw and deservedly so. Rarely is the combination of mystical ruins, natural beauty and remote allure so seamlessly stitched. So, it is obvious that the visitor to Siem Reap will spend the majority of their time at the Khmer ruins. That’s not to say that the town itself does not have its own charms but with a World Heritage Site like Angkor on hand, all other things take a back seat. Enjoy and cherish one of the world’s great wonders, especially before it becomes too overrun with tourists. The slow boat from Battambang was longer than anticipated. Well, in terms of time anyway. In terms of distance, it was actually shorter. How this is possible is a matter of level; water level that is. As with most tropical locations, Cambodia’s rivers swell with the wet season and come...

Taste the Local Flavor - Cambodian French Bread

by i-s-a

We chanced upon this local bread by the roadside going to one of the temples...cost us1,000Riel.Crunchy and a bit oily on the outside and soft inside...you'd wish you brought some cream cheese...this is delicious. And as this bread is so big, it will dispel your hunger for hours! This food is not for the squimish... because the road can be quite dusty and imagine those dust landing on your bread....but who cares???

Say a Little Prayer

by i-s-a

Being so far away from home...with so many new things to see and a totally different feel...it is nice to say a little prayer of thanks. While biking around along the river of downtown Siem Reap we chanced upon this charmng little church. We went inside the compound and parked our rented bicycles. It turned out that the mass has just ended (it was Holy Wednesday) and the friendly parishioners welcomed us warmly. Afterwards, the parish priest waited for us outside and offered us breakfast. We were pressed for time so we declined, said thanks and went our way. Little communities like this make a foreigner feel at home and left us with wonderful feelings long after we have come for a visit.

Get change in US Dollars --- not in Riel!

by joeymello

The national currency of Cambodia is the Riel. The exchange rate is roughly USD $1 = 4000 Riel. Cambodian vendors use dollar bills everywhere in Siem Reap as the main currency of use. They use the Riel as change money. For example, if they sold you an item cost $3.50 and you paid them $5.00, they'll give you back a 6000 Riel back. If you tell them you want the money in US Dollars, they will give you $1 USD and 2000 Riel back (most of them don't have US coins.)Note that you can always ask them to give you change back in US Dollars b/c they have it! The simplicity of life in Siem Reap is my fondest memory.

Union Bank Near Old Market

by vuzu

Guys, if you want to withdraw advance cash in Cambodia, do it in Siem Reap Union bank which is near to the old market . There is NO commision or admin charge.I've tried about 5banks in Phnom Penh and they do charge for few dollars for advance cash withrawal.Besides, bear in mind that, credit card is NOT widely used in Cambodia except BIG hotel or well known travel agencies.

Wandering Around

by Hewer

Like in many places, it`s interesting enough just wandering around. There are some great little shops and restaurants and you can see the locals go about their daily work.I found it perfectly safe and hassle-free during the day and for the most part at night. After dark a lot of motos pulled up alongside me to ask me if wanted a `massage`. I just said I didn`t speak English, smiled and shook my head. They weren`t persistent.

The price is right

by TangoTravel

If you're temple exploring one of the best guide books around is Dawn Rooney's book, Angkor. The author explains in great detail the history of the site and temples and devotes much of the text to details of each temple. The recommended price of this book is £14.95 or $22.95 back in the West. But, it can be purchased from the tourist office opposite the Grand Hotel d'Angkor for $8. If this is too much for your budget, the local market and the local kids hawking outside the temple will sell you a copy for about $3 or less....but the origin of these items may be more dubious in nature.
