From earth to sky at Ta Prohm

by shrimp56

After many years of letting nature "take back" Ta Prohm, they are now doing selective work to stall the total destruction of this amazing site..Here is some information about the efforts:http://www.meadev.nic.in/govt/Announcement-ICC-July%202-3,%202002.htm

Guides

by jmmorgan

There are plenty of tourist guides available in Siem Reap. Some will offer to take you around on their motorbike. The quality of the guides varies enormously as does the standard of their language. Ensure you are comfortable with your guides standard of your language, his knowledge and the condition of the vehicle before you agree.

The Dancing Angels ...

by shrimp56

Throughout the Angkor complex you will see many bas-relief carvings of "apsara" -- or the dancing angels/divinities. At Angkor Wat alone there are over 2,000 of these carvings..Please visit my travelogue for images of apsara from Angkor Wat, Angkor Thum/Bayon & Ta Prohm.

Dawn at Angkor Wat ...

by shrimp56

There has to be a good reason to get me up this early -- and this was one indeed! We almost missed the sunrise because two of our tour members were slow getting going -- but we did see enough to know that it was worth the early rise. Our guide took us around to the left of the entry building. Watching the light change as the sun rose and then turned everything golden...

Beat the locals in bargaining...

by shintarojon

Here are some rules to follow that I think could help you save your cash when buying souvenirs, etc.1. Ask for the price of a souvenir you want but DON'T BUY RIGHT AWAY! Smile and leave the shop/s! Look for another shop and ask the price.2. After comparing 2 to 3 shops, you have now at least idea how much is the selling price of the item you want. 3. Now, be brave enough and tell the lowest ceiling price for the item you want! At least 70% to 80% less of the selling price! Believe me! Specially for our Japanese VT members, when sellers know that you are a Japanese tourist, prices of their products automatically increases as high as 300%!!!4. After telling your desired price, then it is the turn of the seller to give his/her price. But still, be firm! Don't be afraid to tell the price you want. Well, of course, you can add a little!5. If he\she doesn't like your desired price, then leave...

Changing money

by herzog63

You don't have to change money unless you want to. The Khmer vendors take US $$ , Thai Baht , & Cambodian Rial ! You will almost always get your change back in Rial. Which you can use for small purchases such as softdrinks or snacks during the day. Just make sure you have US $$ with no tears or at least looking fairly new. And have plenty of $1 and $5 notes only in the new style. And don't bring any old style (small Head) US notes as it will be impossible to get rid of them!! All Restaurants , Hotels stores will take US $$ and more than likely most of them will want you to pay in US $$. If you stay in a guest house you will pay when you leave. So if you stay 6 days the manager will add up your total as you check out. It is the Cambodian Style. Unlike in Thailand where you may pay each day or week in advance. Just do a little math in your head so you understand what you're giving and...

Go soon

by jmmorgan

This is the best of my tips. Angkor is a phenomenal place. Visit it at your earliest opportunity. The road from the airport and from Siem Reap to the temples was seeing a lot of building works while we were there. We also saw a magazine that highlighted that it is hoped that tourism at Angkor would increase to 3 million tourists a year. They will have to fill those new hotel rooms somehow. Go soon before the whole town changes character forever. The area caters for all budgets and all nationalities. There is no excuse at all.

Go early

by jmmorgan

Getting up and going out early gives several advantages. Firstly you will get there before the main crowds and tour groups arrive. Secondly you will miss the main heat of the day. We found that by 10.00Am it was very hot in the temples

Drink Water

by jmmorgan

Outside each of the sites are always some vendors. Purchasing a fresh bottle of water is the best tip I can give you. If you buy fresh at each place it will be cold since the vendors keep it in huge boxes of ice. Drink plenty as you are going around as it is very easy to become dehydrated and you will feel more comfortable.

Miniature of Angkor

by edachsund

I have been visiting Mr Dy for his miniature of Angkor and Bantey Srei. It was marvellous. I even got a gift from him 'The Apsara' sculpture. He had been spending about 3 years time for building up one miniature of Angkor Wat. Huge and exactly like the same. I was amazed.
