Apsara dances

by magor65

When you visit various Angkorian temples you are bound to notice innumerable figures of apsara dancers presented on bas reliefs. According to the legend Apsaras emerged from the milk foam when gods were churning the ocean of milk to extract the nectar of immortality. They are considered to be the symbols of beauty, grace and charm. If you stay in Siem Reap for a couple of days I would recommend attending one of traditional apsara dance performances. We did it and were delighted, though we had hesitated before expecting it to be sort of a tourist trap. Yes, the dances are staged purely for commercial reasons, but in a professional way and they do reflect the long-lived tradition of Khmer dancing. The performers look like copies of apsaras from bas-reliefs: the jewellery and crowns, ornate costumes, bent knees and hand gestures all bring to mind the celestial dancers from the temples. Their...

Volunteering in Siem Reap

by cochinjew

This is a good place to volunteer your services for a little while and if you are in any way connected with Paediatrics I recommend Angkor childrens Hospital near the new Market area. please look at their web site. Kol is in charge of publicity for the hospital and Arun is in charge of volunteers.Medical and Non medical volunteers are welcome and sometimes accomodations may be available.

Donate Blood at Angkor Childrens Hospital

by cochinjew

this is the one right in the centre of town, just next door to the new market, within walking distance of the downtown area. it is a japanese originated NGO and they take care of infants and children with problems including HIV. they are always short on blood so a donation would be helpful.I was impressed with the readiness of Japanese tourits to give blood to the cambodians, something in their knowledge and culture makes them do this sacrifice.

Maung Maung a Local Personality

by cochinjew

I have known Maung Maung since 2003 and he has been a good friend, very helpful with your needs. He also owns Mandalay Inn, the place I usually stay in Siem Reap. He usually comes to pick me up at the airport and organizes my trips around Siem Reap.always he takes a little time off his very busy schedule and have a dinner with me somewhere in Siem Reap, this past week it was at Angkor Palms Restaurant. As befits his burmese personality, he always treats me to the dinner.I highly recommend that you approach him for resolution of any problem in Siem Reap since he is becoming kind of personality in the town, as he has been there for seven or eight years, very long by expatriate standards and he is married to a lovely khmer lady and has two good looking children

shops in the markets

by cochinjew

are usually owned by khmer families and it is nice to befriend them and buy things from them. they try not to cheat you but it is nice to know the price range before you go and bargain. the shop i have been going to is no 24 along the road from Ta Prohm hotel right in front of the river. they have never tried to cheat me and usually end up giving me some gift or another. i have known them for years and the little school girl, Sophin, has now grown up to help her sister at the shop. you might meet other members of the family there as well

Do not touch, it is not a scarecrow.

by woeiyann

This is not a scarecrow! It is a guardian for the house where the spirit of recent past away elder would dwell and protecting the family. There are many of them along the village path to the temple of "Banteay Serai". At first, I wonder why having scarecrow in at the entrance of house and they seems well dressed than the usual one at the field. Pretty eerie if to bump into one at nightAsk for permission before taking the photo.

Family Portraits

by i-s-a

Cambodians have a high regard to families. Finding family portraits in the living room of most homes are a common sight. The photo of the head of the family was usually displayed at the center and the children at both sides. They don their national costume and formal outfits for this.

Blast from the Past

by i-s-a

In Siem Reap, time seems to have stood still. Despite the huge influx of tourist every year, it retains its rustic feel and charm. One such example is their colorful billboards. What makes this interesting and quite unique is that these poster boards are the same old ones very popular during the 70’s. Like in the photo showing a girl talking over the phone. You guessed right…it’s a phone rental shop!Cambodians still use this kind of posters for their advertisements. For example, you can’t read Khmer and you want to have a haircut, look for a shop with a painting of either a lady or gent posted at the door and most probably you’re at the hair salon.

We went to a Cambodian wedding!

by thedouglas

in Siem Reap, we were invited to attend a wedding of a relative of our driver's.We were made to feel welcome-including getting in wedding photos! If you think the couple looks less than "blissful", its because they were several hours into the ceremony when we arrived. It starts at about 6.00am on the day of the wedding, and the ceremony takes about 10 hrs.Traditionally, the process lasts 3 days and 3 nights-or up to 7.This one was a 3 day affair-the final ceremony was basically in a "cubby house"-we had to climb up stairs into a little room, and there were relatives and the presiding 'minister" present for the process. We were ushered in behind the wedding party for photos :0. Unlike Western weddings, guests talk and move around-there is explaining about the ceremony to the younger generation, and people come and go.Like Western marriages, there are flowers and candles, with different...

Income gap

by YM_84

One would need to be in Siem Reap town to really understand the danger of income gap. everyone there seems to be eyeing a piece of flesh from all the fat tourist there.now there is alot more moto and Tuk Tuk driver around to the number of tourist, beggers are everywhere be it the childrens, mothers, disabled. One would be very surprise just to look at the MENU in SR, you would see restruans and hotels and guest house charging first world prices.. but the hotels and restruan owners are the only ones gaining in this fat industary.. they are earning First World income but paying out third world expense for their rent, their untilise bill and extortion wages to salve their workers..Due to the high unemployment rate and the lack of unions and laws avaible, the poor Kumars have to work for extremly long hours with such a misarable pay.. THey would have to work ever since they woke up in the...
