Angkor Mundial Restaurant: Traditional Khmer dances

by sachara

In several restaurants in Siem Reap are cultural performances of classical Khmer dance. Most striking are the apsara (meaning heavenly nymphs) dances. The apsara dance is unique to Cambodia. The Thais with their resembling dances learnt originally their techniques from these Khmer dances. Characteristic for the apsara dances are the stylished hand movements, the stupa-like head-wear, the lamé costumes and the smiles without showing the teeth. Except the apsara dances we saw also Cambodian folkdances and a dance with a mask.

The street where all the tourists gather.....

by sachara

The street one blok north of the Psar Chaa is the street with many restaurants like the Red Piano and Soup Dragon, serving Khmer, but also international food.During the evening and night it looks like all tourists of Siem Reap gather here after their visit to the Angkor temples. There are good restaurants, nice bars and the atmosphere is very lively. It was close to our hotel, so we went there a few times for dinner or a drink and liked to look at the liveliness from one of the balconies of the terraces, though it was not the Cambodia where we came for in the first place.

The Foreign Correspondents Club: A relaxing evening

by Tina-Perth

The Foreign Correspondents Club was opened in December 2004. It is the newest contemporary resort and a member of the Exclusive Design Hotels. The FCC Angkor Bar is very relaxed with tasteful decor and very good staff. The tasting plates were a hit with us as we'd had a late lunch and just wanted a snack to go with our drinks. The food was very good.I had initially thought this was just a bar/restaurant, but as I was leaving I picked up a couple of brochures and read what else there is on offer. It is an actual full resort with 29 luxurious guest rooms, 2 suites and the Visaya Spa. The resort is designed with a Zen influence and each room is hidden away from view amongst the gardens which we saw around the carpark and they do look lovely. It is centrally located by the river, within walking distance of the old market. Dress code is casual. The bar is very relaxed and laid back.PS: Picture...

Martini club: The most bizarre nightclub I have been to

by grahamopey

Alright so maybe it's not 100% ludicrous but the strange mix of asian hand dancing, schmoozy grooves and western early 90's / cheesy disco (in that order - every time) is wierd to experience to say the least. The door staff do have guns so make sure you are well behaved and I did see some Khmer men hassling an American guy for dancing with a Khmer girl so it's not neccessarily a detterent. Its not the best place but with the right mix of people and the right quantity of beer I felt like I was fifteen again. No dresscode (apparently)

Angkor Beer, national beer of Cambodia: "Satisfy beer drinkers, anytime, anywhere!"

by bpacker

Now, in contrast with the Siem Reap Singapore Sling experience, I had a bad experience with the national beer of Cambodia - ANGKOR BEER. I had great expectations since the beer looked promising with a picture of the three corn-cob towers of the famous Wat and some amusing words on the poster ads - "This premium quality lager is to satisfy discerning beer drinkers the world over - anytime, anywhere!" After I decided I was fairly discerning as a beer drinker and that I was appropriately displaced in Cambodia, I decided to take a sip. The first taste wasn't too bad, it had a fairly crisp, clean largery taste. Mildly bitter-sweet too. But just like a blind date gone wrong, the taste begun to degrade as it warmed up, taking on the taste of the cheap alcoholic swill that you can find in China. To top it off, I got a ****ing headache two hours after I had the drink and it didn't come cheap too....

The Elephant Bar: not quite Raffles but worth the visit

by richiecdisc

Ok, it may lack some of the grandeur of Raffles in Singapore but the Elephant Bar still captures much of the aura of that era when only the rich and famous got to play in such remote playgrounds as Angkor Wat. Part of the same chain as its more famous Singapore cousin, the Elephant Bar is well appointed and has a timeless air; one can nearly see monocled mustached men in pith helmets sitting around smoking pipes with little imagination. Of course, it’s pricey with a couple of fancy cocktails fetching what could feed and house a couple for a day, but if you go before eight, you get two for one. D’s cocktail choice came in a clay sculptured glass mimicking the Khmer style found in the temples. Hey, sometimes you have to splurge and this is one of those times. There was an interesting black and white photo exhibition of the Angkor ruins that was a bonus while we were there so enquire to see...

Temple Dance Club: free nuts anyone?

by richiecdisc

The Temple Dance Club offered a more affordable place to enjoy a drink than the Elephant Bar and had plenty of atmosphere to boot. Of course, it may have been a great dance club later in the evening but we never made it so late. It was nonetheless a great place for happy hour. First off, all drinks are $2 or less and between 4-9 PM you get one free for every two you buy. It was a long narrow place with an American style stand up bar running its length. There were nice little tables inside and out but we opted for the former to avoid not only the heat of the evening but street beggars. A nice touch was a free bowl of peanuts with each drink purchase. I believe we did eat a meal but who remembers anything but three for two and free nuts?! A great place to unwind after a day at the ruins. Pretty casual for the happy hour but who knows, maybe the bouncers are more strick when the dancing...

Available in any drinking joint in Siem Reap: The Best Beer in Asia?

by bpacker

Now, after a horrendous experience with Angkor Beer, my expectations were somewhat cooled when it came to Beer Lao. Yes, even after reading a surprisingly good review in ASIAWEEK on the "LEADING BEER in ASIA" . Good thing I didn't get excited. The asiaweek article turn up to be crap after all. Beer Lao was pale yellow in color with little carbonation and tastes mildly sweet. Unlike Angkor Beer however, the taste didn't degrade as it warmed up but still it pales to the likes of Tiger and Asahi. It was simply too watery , ugh. The person who wrote the review for Beer Lao probably favours sweet American-bottled Chardonnay as well.

Buddha Lounge: Atmospheric Little Drinking Joint with Great Food

by bpacker

Now if you need a dark, little joint to chill out after checking out all the temples in the hot, hot day, BUDDHA LOUNGE is just the place. Service is impeccable, the waiters are polite and the ambience soothing. Everyone over here nurses the de rigeur bottle of beer while listening to the strains of Armstrong's jazz. I prefer this place to the Red Piano since it's darker and quieter..Tip: Ask for the Tokolok drink - it's a delicious blended fruit and condensed milk drink, served icy cold.

Red Piano: Lara Croft's Siem Reap Hangout

by bpacker

Now when the 3 divas heard that Angelina Jolie used to hang out at the Red Piano, they set off for the same place for dinner one night. All 3 wanted to see what attracted the high goddess of adventure! So, off they went and they chose the best seats on the house by the balcony . It overlooked the busy streets of Psar Chaa and gave the 3 divas a nice overview of the restaurants there. Sad to say, this place didn't appeal to the divas. Though this was the biggest, most decent looking joint in the street, it was too bright, too westernised and septic to the likes of the divas. Plus, there were no crocodiles or memorable dishes that appealed to any of them. The divas left after their cocktails and swore to go to Buddha Lounge which looked dark and mysterious from where they were sitting. Suitable for backpackers and families so anything casual will do. Go for the seats by the balcony , it's...
