Wat Preah Prohm Rath

by balhannah

This Wat is located beside the River in the centre of town. It was founded in 1915. In the grounds are two large cannons, said to have belonged to a 20th century War Lord. Worth a quick look and is easy to get to.The website is a map which will show you where it is located.

Markets

by balhannah

A browse around the local markets is enjoyable and in Cambodia you can look without being hassled much at all. The people are friendly and nice, and understand that you just want to look, or get out of the sun. There are several markets here. The "Old Market" starts near the Old Market Bridge and is on the corner of Pokombor Avenue, it takes up the whole square. There is also the "centre market" which is quite big and located on Sivatha Blvde, and a Night & Noon market, I didn't get to the latter two. Both Markets were within walking distance from my Hotel, or if I was lazy, it cost $1us for a tuk-tuk.If you have a look at the website, it gives you a map with all the locations of markets, etc. on it.

Massage Fish

by stedeb

We took the opportunity to have a fish massage by "Dr Fish". It has to be the funniest thing you wil expeirence while in Cambodia-I have been told they also do it in Vietnam. You sit on the edge of the fish pool and the fish nibble away at all your dead skin on your feet!! Can't say my feet felt any differant but it was fun for $US3 for 15 mins(actually about 30).

Aki Ra - Land Mine Museum

by Cathy&Gary

Aki Ra is a mine clearer and he opened his museum in 1999.The museum is very simple, a corrugated iron building, some rickety sheds and open air eating and sleeping quarters. The new Museum, built from donations, is located on the road at Banteay Srey, inside the Angkor Wat Park. It is a must when you are visiting the temples. As a young child Aki parents were killed and he spent years in various armies, fighting with the Khmer Rouge, then against them. One thing he learnt all about was Mines. In 1993 Aki worked with the UN clearing mines, this was a good time in his life as he also had the opportunity to go to school and study, so life took a turn for the better. Once the UN left Aki kept clearing mines and amassing a huge collection of guns, bombs, mines etc. This collection is now the Cambodia Land Mine Museum. When Aki Ra first moved from his rented room in Siem Reap to this location,...

Artisans d' Angkor Stone & Wood Carving Centre

by Cathy&Gary

The Artisans d' Angkor Stone & Wood Carving centre is in Siem Reap town 200 metres off Sivatha Road.On this tour you will see the artisans working on pre cut blocks of stone or wood, following very precise techniques they trim and carve the blocks with their own handmade tools. See how Lacquering and Gilding is done on Sandstone, once these objects are finished they have an aged look similar to that of an original artifact. Then move on to see how wood is lacquered and gilded, watch the wood being degreased and then see colors being applied from natural pigments. The pieces can then be decorated with copper leaf gilding. Sand is then applied and the object is polished to give it a glossy look.Opening Hours 7.00am - 6.30pm After you have finished the above tour, the highlight (for me) was going into the showroom and seeing the beautiful products on sale. The shop is a showcase of wood and...

National Silk Centre

by Cathy&Gary

Artisans d'Angkor National Silk CentreThe National Silk Centre is about 16 Kilometers west of Siem Reap on Route 6. We really enjoyed the tour through here and once again there is no charge and you have your own personal guide. The tour starts right from the beginning, outside with the planting of the mulberry trees which are used for raising the silkworms. They feed on these leaves until they reach the cocoon stage. Then you will see the artisans extracting the silk threads from the cocoon shells using hand reels. The threads are then treated and dyed with colors from all natural products prior to spooling. Some of the items take weeks or even months to make and many are collector’s items. Another great tour, well worth doing.National Silk Centre ShopThis shop is mainly silk products e.g. ready to wear men’s and women’s clothing, fashion accessories, cushions, silk bedding etc. There is...

Ta Phrom

by Cathy&Gary

Ta Phrom was built in the mid 12th early 13th Centuries and is east of Angkor Thom. Ta Phrom has been left untouched except for the clearing of some jungle for a path for visitors and some structural strengthening to help stop further deterioration. Its a stunning place with massive fig and silk-cotton trees growing from the towers and corridors and spreading their gigantic roots over, under and inbetween the stone pillars of the complex. This temple was one of King Jayavarmans first major temple projects and was dedicated to his mother. Ta Phrom was originally a buddhist monastery and there was a sandscript inscription on stone (this is now in the Conservation d'Angkor). This stone tells about the size and function of Ta Phrom.Ta Phrom was very wealthy in its time having control of over 3140 villages, 79,365 staff to maintain the complex, including 18 High Priests, 2,740 officials, 2,202...

Royal Palace

by Cathy&Gary

The Royal Palace is in the centre of the city of Angkor Thom and is distinguished by 2 terraces that parallel the road. Only the stone substructure is left so it is difficult to imagine the scale and layout of the original complex. The residences of the King and people who worked in the palace were made of wood and so have totally disintegrated. Allow approx. 15 minutes to see the Royal Palace.

Tip Photo
Baphuon

by Cathy&Gary

Baphuon was built in the middle of the 11th Century and is located 200 metres north-west of the Bayon. This single temple mountain sanctuary is situated on a high base which symbolizes Mount Meru. A highlight of the temple is the bas-reliefs which are different from most others as they are carved in small stone squares set above one another on the temple walls. This temple is under repair and was closed when we were there. Much of it has collapsed or been dismantled and is at this moment under going intensive restoration. Though the exterior entry gate and elevated walkway are still open. Allow about 1 hour to see the Baphuon when it opens.

Preah Khan

by Cathy&Gary

Preah Khan was constructed in the late 12th Century and is 2 kilometres north-east of Angkor Thom. There is also a visitor centre here with lots of information and before and after photos of reconstruction. This complex was built as a monastery and centre for learning by King Jayavarman V11, for a short time it was also the residence of the king while his permanent residence was being reconstructed. Preah Khan means "Sacred Sword" and was dedicated to his father. The "Sacred Sword" has a long tradition in Khmer history as Preah Khan was built on a former battle site where King Jayavarman defeated the Chams. Huge trees have played a major part in the destruction of this complex and also play a part in supporting some of the structures. Thousands of Buddha images were defaced here during the centuries by trying to transform the Buddhist complex into a Hindu temple. Preah Khan is beautiful...
