The Terraces

by Cathy&Gary

The TerracesTerrace of the Elephants was built in the late 12th Century and is a very impressive two and a half metre high wall which is decorated with carved elephants and giant garudas. This wall extends for over 300 metres from the Baphuon to the Terrace of the Leper KingThere are 3 main platforms and the south stairway is framed with 3 headed elephants with lotus flowers in their trunks which form columns. At the northern end of the platform behind the outer wall is a large horse sculpture with 5 heads which is the horse of the King.Terrace of the Leper King was built late 12th Century and is at the north end of the Terrace of the Elephants. This terrace was named for the statue of the leper king that sits on top. Though this statue is a replica and the original is in the National Museum in Phnom Penh.

Angkor Wat

by Cathy&Gary

We decided to only buy a one day pass and spend the whole day at the temples. The pass cost $20 and you do not need a photo for this pass.(You buy the pass at the entrance to the park). We did not have a guide but highly recommend buying Dawn Rooney's Angkor book, we paid $5 for a genuine second hand one - much better quality than a copy one, make sure its the fourth or a later edition. This book tells you everything about the temples, the time you will need to spend there and has maps, photos etc.Angkor Wat was built in the first half of the 12th century, it is the largest monument in the Angkor group and is quite simply Breathtaking. The temple itself is 1 kilometer square and consists of 3 levels surmounted by a central tower, this is then surrounded by a wall measuring 1300metres by 1500metres and then surrounded by a moat. The exterior walls of the first level are covered with...

WAX MUSEUM

by balhannah

The Wax Museum is located in the Cambodian Cultural Village. This Museum, showcases well known persons from the past to the present, and also gives a good insight to Cambodian culture. There are over 30 different wax statues, all very well done, and with a description of what they are.

Balloon

by balhannah

The balloon ride near Angkor Wat, I thought was a big disappointment. You go up in a tethered balloon, this is fine. The view, because of the smog is not the best, you could hardly make out Angkor wat. Perhaps the best time would be early morning or late afternoon. On a smog free day it would be excellent. Choose your day and time. The cost for 10mins was $15, which in comparison with other countries is cheap.

The Royal Residence

by balhannah

The Royal Residence is used by the King as a holiday Palace. Infront are gardens, which just look like a park, no fences. BEWARE! You cannot walk in, I started to, and suddenly a guard with gun appeared and shooed me out. There weren't any signs that I could see.

Angkor Wat

by martin555

If you ever visit Siem Reap visit Angkor Wat! It's a very popular tourist attraction and a very beautiful spot. It's a lot of old temples, and most of them are many thousand years old. Visit Angkor Wat!!:-) I'm uploading some pictures from the time i visited Angkor Wat, so you can see how it's like.

Cambodian Cultural village

by balhannah

The Cultural Village is about 11/2 kms from Siem Reap town. Its on the road to the airport. First of all, you walk through a wax figure museum, then into the gardens where cultural shows are held. I watched the Khmer Traditional music and the Khmer Wedding ceremony, both were excellent. The wedding ceremony finishes at 11.25am, then more shows don''t begin until 2.30, so it is best to go in the afternoon. It was very hot the day I was there, so I didn't stick around. At 2.30pm is the "charming scarf show,"3.10pm only on fri, sat, sun Tonle sap heritage dancing, 3.55pm, chinese traditional dancing, 4.25pm Peacock dancing, 5.00pm, choosing fiance, 5.40pm, My beautiful village, 6.15pm, rice praying, and only on fri, sat, sun The greatest king jayavarman 7 show at 7.30pm.I didn't find this in the Lonely planet guide. To me, it was set in a lovely garden setting and the shows were really good....

Bayon

by arianne_1504

The Bayon is located in the center of the city of Angkor Thom 1500 meters (4921 feet) from the south gate and was built in late 12th century to early 13th century, by the King Jayavarman VII, dedicated to Buddhism. The Bayon was originally considered to be a Hindu Sanctuary, but in 1925 was recognised as Buddhist. The Bayon was built nearly 100 years after Angkor Wat. Since it was located at the centre of a royal city it seems possible that the Bayon would have originally been a temple-mountain conforming to the symbolism of a microcosm of Mount Meru.

Ta Prohm

by arianne_1504

Ta Prohm (also known as the Tomb Raider temple for those of you who are fans of the movie), was consecrated in 1186 by King Jayavarman VII and was dedicated to his mother. No fewer than 12,640 persons were thought to have lived here, including 18 high priests, 2,740 officiants and 2,232 attendants). Among the possessions of the temple were more than 500kg of gold plate, 35 diamonds, 40,620 pearls, 4,540 precious stones, 876 Chinese veils, 512 silk litters and 523 parasols. Much of the temple is in ruins and is being smothered by figs and kapok trees, but this only adds to the awe of the place.

Tonle Sap Lake cruise

by Jim_Eliason

This lake, a few kilometers south of Siem Reap is Cambodia's largest lake. On the lake is a floating village of Vietnamese fishers who had permanently taken up residence on houses built on stilts in the lake. It's quite a sight to see.
