Phnom Bakheng

by Jim_Eliason

This hilltop temple is known for its spectacular views of Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom. It is especially popular for watching the sunset. You can climb the hill or can hire an elephant to take you up to the top.

Banteay Srei

by Jim_Eliason

This temple is located in the farthest north of the Ankgor complex and the farthest from Siem Reap. It takes about an hour to get here but it's worth a visit. Banteay Srei is known for it ornateness. The temple is covered with very detailed delicate reliefs.

Angkor Thom

by Jim_Eliason

Angkor Thom was the main city of the Khmer in the region. This huge walled city was founded by King Jayavarman VII sometime around 1200. It replaced the original city built in 899 AD. The walls of the city extended 12 Kms on each side. The sight is huge! One could spend a couple of days just exploring every nook and cranny of Angkor Thom.

Angkor Wat

by Jim_Eliason

This world heritage site is the must-see sight that brings people to Siem Reap. It's size and ornatess has to be seen by the tourists visiting here. The temple was built by the Khmer culture, specifically by Suryavarman II. It was actively used until late 1500's when the Khmer culture collapsed after being invaded by Thailand.

Volunteer!

by tigerjapan

Volunteering is a great experience and if you have time, even 30 minutes, then I couldn't recommend it more.SOID: Supporting Orphans & Indigent People of Cambodia for Development Organization offers "education training to orphans and poor children so that they will have a good future and be able to contribute in the rebuilding of Cambodia". It works in the slums of Siem Reap giving English and Khmer classes to 109 children from the area.

Dancers at the Bayon

by balhannah

As I wandered around the Bayon, I came across a group of Dancers. They were only there for photo shoots. You could have your photo taken with them, or, them on their own, with your camera for $1. They were in traditional costume, and looked really good. (see photo)

Local Markets

by touraco

Visit the local markets. There are 3 that I know of. All 3 are within walking distance from each other. They are the center market, night market and old market. The old market is only opened during the day as it's a daily fresh produce market which sells meat, fish and vegetables. On the other side of this market, you can see shops selling souvenirs.Center and Night Markets are also markets that sell sourvenirs.

Apsara Performances

by touraco

Apsara - otherwise known as the celestial maiden. The dance mimic the movements of the apsaras carving from the temple. There are several such dinner and dance restuarants around town. I went to the one next to my hotel called Koulen. It costs US$12 per pax including buffet but excluding drinks.

Visiting the temples

by touraco

Visiting Angkor Wat and the rest of the temples are a must do for tourists.Guides are readily available from the internet, airport and hotels. But do be careful of those you engaged from airports as I have heard incidents that they are not that honest.I got mine from the Internet and I find him pretty knowledgeable. Do email me if you need his contact.I paid US$30 for a guide for the whole day and US$30 for the driver as well as an additional US$5 each for the sunrise. A pity I didn't get to see the sunrise as it was pretty cloudy. The guide will be able to find good spots for photo taking and explain to you the rich history of the place and the stone carvings.
