Foot Massage

by muratkorman

There are many massage parlours in the town center which offer reasonable prices for an hour long foot massage. The usual price starts from 6 USD onwards. After a long and tiring day in Angkor Wat, you need to give a treat to your feet. Just go to town centre and go inside one of the massage parlours. You will feel much better after the relaxing foot massage. Some parlor names are Be VIP, Blue 7, Madam 1 and so on.

Land Mine Museum

by muratkorman

For Cambodian history, Khmer Rouge Era is full of bloodshed and massacres. This era also contaminated Cambodia with land mines which took many lives then and till now. Land mine museum shos the truth in your face with pictures and samples. A formerly Khmer Rouge soldier has built this museum and he actively cleaned many land mines from the region. He tries to increase awareness on this big problem as there are still many land mines active in Cambodia. You may see so many land mine victims in Siem Reap and there are so many orphans who lost their parents to these land mines. Visiting here and making some donations is a good contribution to Cambodian people.

Floating Village on Tonle Sap Lake

by muratkorman

If you stay in Siem Reap for a few days, you must also visit the floating village on Tonle Sap Lake. This huge lake has many floating villages and one of them is close to the Siem Reap. You need to arrange your boat trip through a local agent in Siem Reap. The cost is 15 USD per person. However, to reach Tonle Sap you need to take a car, taxi or tuk-tuk. Before going to Tonle Sap, please bring some cookies, biscuits and chocolate to the children living in Tonle Sap area. With the voucher you receive from the agent, you find the boat reserved for you. Then your boat journey around the floating village starts. In the floating village, you can see fish and crocodile farms, floating houses, floating shops, floating school and even a floating church. During munsoon season, these floating houses are all towed by other boats to safer locations on the lake. The main income is fishing and you can...

Killing Fields Memorial

by muratkorman

In order to understand how much Cambodian people suffered during Khmer Rouge Era, you need to visit the killing fields. Although the big one is located in capitol Phnom Penh, this one in Siem Reap also gives you enough evidence of the cruelty and crime against humanity.

Artisans d'Angkor

by muratkorman

This place consists of workshops where locals make woodworks and stone carvings. A guide will show you around and give brief information on how these handicrafts are done. After the tour, you can visit the shop where all these handicrafts are on sale. I appreciated this organization very much since they have found a way to provide work for the local people and also keep artisans alive.

Ta Prohm

by Eggboy

This is the famous temple featured in the Tomb Raider movie with the tree roots taking over the crumbling temple structure. Its a short drive from Angkor Thom I feel the best way to enter is via the east gate as you get a really nice walk through the forest leading to the main temple. Rather than describe the entire detail of the temple I will just say that it has a great energy and "vibe", with the power of nature taking over what was once a magnificent monument. Couple of things to note. Like Angkor Wat there is an echo chamber just before the main temple. For good luck you beat your chest 3 times and feel the power of the echo. There is well preserved Apsara and other detailed carvings like the "dinosaur" which seems out of place. Even my guide and his teacher is perplexed by what this animal/beast is supposed to be. Check out my photos. They speak for themselves.

Royal Independance Gardens

by Eggboy

If you are exhausted after touring temples and shopping in Siem Reap town, you can wander north of town to the Roayal Independance Gardens. There are park benches, trees, lawns just like most city gardens and even a couple of shrines. Not exactly a huge tourist attraction but if you want peace and quiet you will get it here.

Banteay Samre

by Eggboy

This is a cool little temple you can visit on the way back to Siem Reap from Banteay Srei. I like the well preserved windows with the typcial carved columns. Samre is a group of people who live some where nearby Phnom Kulen but they move to lived some where nearby the temple now called Preah Dak village. So they named the temple because it was in the village where Samre peoples lived. Actually this temple was also built in the same time with Angkor Wat. Dedicated to Visnhu, and probably used as the funeral temple of the king, as the French found the stone coffin underneath of the central tower the same size of that which was found at Angkor Wat.

Banteay Srei, Temple

by Eggboy

Banteay Srei translates as City of Women which implies it was built by or for women. Not sure if this is true or not but it is smaller in stature than most Khmer temples but the intricate carvings are what people come to see.Its walls are made of leterite (which is the red dimpled volcanic rock) and the carvings and scultures are pink sandstone. Its around 25-30km out of Siem Reap but is well worth the trip. Standard Angkor temple pass will get you entry to Banteay Srei.

Tip Photo
Preah Ko

by Eggboy

Yes, another temple in the Rolous Group just across the road from Bakong. It features a couple of Bull statues as pictured here. Its a mix of brickwork, plasterwork and sandstone and has some very intricate carvings also pictured. The brickwork's mortar is not at all visible and apparently was made up of powder from crushed shells and tree saps. It was undergoing much restoration at the time of my visit in 2007 so it is no doubt in better shape now.
