Bus to Kampot

Buses leave from the central market to take you to Kampot, but it may be quicker to take a share car as i did. Usually they cram 4 people in the back seat and 2 more in the front. On my trip i found that there were also 2 girls from Sweden so we offered to pay extra to have the back seat to ourselves, but we were shocked when the Cambodian got out of the back and sat in the front occupying the driver's seat. The driver drove all the way to Kampot sitting on the knees of the extra passenger. However he must have been pleased to make an extra few dollars.

Motorcycle taxi

The main form of transportation around town is by motorcycle taxi. They are anywhere, anytime. Just look for a guy sitting on a motorcycle with a baseball cap. Rides around town are 1 to 3 dollar, depending on distance, and you can usually get 2 passengers on one motorcycle. Most trips are only a few minutes, but you can hire a motorcycle to take you outside of town as well. Nighttime, prices go up a bit, and for more than one passenger, prices go up as well. Agree for the price for your trip in advance.

Travel between the capital Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville really could not be easier. Various types of buses and taxis ply the route along what was always the best road in the country and your choice is limited effectively by how much you want to spend. Most of the buses leave from the Southwest corner of the Central market, are air-con and will take between three and four hours. There will be a comfort stop en-route for about 30 minutes whilst the driver has something to eat. The smaller buses are marginally faster and marginally more expensive although, as a tall man, I don't like them as I always find the legroom limited. Various touts in Phnom Penh, including those at hotels will try and tell you that you must book the day before. With the possible exception of Lunar New Year, that is nonsense and probably so even then. They just want their commission. Turn up at the GNT office and...

Convenient and quick

I hired a driver and car to travel from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville. I did this via the hotel that I was staying at - the Dara Reang Sey, in Phnom Penh. It cost me $40USD each way. The hotel arranged for the driver to pick me up at the airport and take me directly to Sihanoukville. The journey was very smooth and pleasant and in my opinion worth paying the extra for.

Take a Tuk-Tik

To get around Sihanoukville, I used Tuk Tuks. There seemed to be plenty around and could always be found near the Golden Lions Traffic Island. Make sure that you haggle and agree a price before starting your journey.

Taxi to/from Phnom Penh

There are several ways getting from Sihanoukville to Phnom Penh (or the other way around). A taxi is most convenient as you get directly to your destination without changing vehicles or taking your luggage of a bus and then find and store it all into another bus, taxi or tuk tuk.A taxi trip takes about 3,5 hours. We paid USD35 from Sihanoukville. The hotel we stayed at offered cars from USD45, however the travel agents outside the resort knocks the price down by 10 USD. The resorts hire cars from the travel agents so you can only guess where the extra USD10 goes. I asked in Phnom Penh what one should pay getting back to Sihanoukville and most suggested around USD 30, but was not "shocked" by the going rate at USD35 including toll roads.The roads are mostly fine.There are a bunch of travel agents on Serendipity Beach.Like everywhere else: Do agree on the price before you go.

The scenic way to/from Sihanoukville

I had two options crossing the Thai border on my way to Sihanoukville: either bus or boat. It wasn't difficult. The boat leaves at 8 am every day from Koh Kong. USD 15 and close to four hours later you're in Sihanoukville. It is a lovely scenery along the Cambodian coast and much more comfortable than traveling by by bus (at least that's my personal opinion).The boat returns from Sihanoukville to Koh Kong/Thai border at noon - 12am - every day. Tickets can be bought at hotels or on the pier.Locals are selling soft drinks on board. The express boat makes a short stop at Pok Long.Some warn that the boat is build for rivers only and should be avoided when the weather is bad. I traveled in the winter time (November) and the ocean was silent and the sun was shining all day long.
