Kampot

by AndreSTGT

Kampot is a sleepy provincial town with old colonial buildings and streets in an atrocious state of repair. It's one of the most relaxed places i've ever been to and a good starting point for an excursion to Bokor NP.2005 update :Not much has changed in Kampot in the last few years. Of course, more and more travelers are passing through, there's now a real backpacker guesthouse, you can book tours to nearby attractions such as Bokor and Kep, there's a few farang bars, espresso and internet, but it's all not intrusive and very laid-back.

Sihanoukville

by AndreSTGT

The town of Sihanoukville is a bit inland and not very attractive. The coast, however, offers verdant rolling hills and pretty beaches that are mostly empty.Rent a scooter and take a tour of the beaches, on some of them there are hawker stalls with hammocks where you can take a break and have a fresh coconut, while looking at the sea.2005 update :Sihanoukville is no longer off-the-beaten track. There are dozens of guesthouses in town and on the coast, and there's even a luxury resort on Sokha Beach. The most popular beach, Ochheutal, can get quite crowded, but there's still enough room for everybody. If you're on a really tight budget you could consider staying in one of the free rooms on the beach. These are provided by beach bar operators, the only catch is that you have to eat at their place twice daily, but it's still a bargain considering that you can hardly spend more than 2$ for a...

Battambang

by richiecdisc

Being from Jersey I liked the name of this place right off that bat. Badabing, badabang, Battambang. It sounded nice but a bit out of the way so I just wasn’t sure about making the trek until other plans fell through. An extended exotic trip to the jungle turned into a relaxing trip to the beach and a gem of a find in Battambang. It was the first place in Cambodia where we felt totally comfortable. It is still in its infancy for tourism so treat with care. Aside from a few touts offering rooms on arrival, you’ll really feel like no one notices you are there. It’s a rare chance to see Cambodians going about everyday life and an interesting place to spend a few days en route to the big attractions of the country. At least you’ll know you didn’t miss everything in your rush to join the herd. Details in my upcoming Battambang page.

take time for the rivers

by richiecdisc

One great reason to visit the quiet and authentic city of Battambang is to take the river trip from there to Siem Reap. It offers the most picturesque entry to the country’s main tourist attraction of Angkor Wat. You will see examples a relaxed river life found only in simple backwaters like this with small floating villages dotting the scenery and a fair amount of birdlife too. The trip should be done before the dry season sets in as in times of low water, it can become a bit arduous and definitely longer too.

experience the safari of the East

by khaichung

try to go into the deep village in Cambodia, where, the only transport will be the local 'motordom' [motorcycle] or the 4wd. riding at the back of the truck will let you see a lot of the wild sides of Cambodia. however, be prepared to sweat and get dirty as journey will be very dusty. you have to be able to endure the bumpy ride too... not suitable for the old and weak hearted. you will be able to pass a lot of landmine filled areas too

Battambang Killing Caves and local villages

by largerama

About 1/2 hour outside of Battambang are caves where Polpot's regime massacred over 20 thousand people. Skeleton remains and eerie caves. Some good Buddhas and Wats to see and with a good guide fascinating but harrowing tales. Then on way back, you can see river village life up close and even ride on the bamboo train.Use a good guide such as Han Houn who usually hangs out at Royal Hotel. He lived through the worst times and had both parents killed. His contact details are listed below.

Fishing Village on Sonle Lap

by Not4theFeint

Take a trip to one of the many fishing villages on the lake, but try to find one that does not have many visitors, the smaller unknown one are much better, and the local people still very friendly to visitors, unlike the popular villages where tourists get herded through.

"paradise islands" (KEP)

by skydivefred

When in KEP, you might be offered a boat ride to some islands in the distance such as "Rabbit Island" .When staying at the ChampeyInn hotel, the owner, who had invited me to stay, offered me to go with a couple of his staff to some island where absolutely not a single tourist go. As a matter of fact, there aren't any infrastructure of any kind but a couple of fishermen's huts. you can stay there but with no confort at all. be also prepared to meet some "not so nice" insects !!!!!I really felt in the skin of some Renaissance explorer !!!! Amazingly beautiful, damn hot, strange fauna but genuine and so PEACEFUL . Check out the piccy.

Off the beaten path in Phnom Penh

by skydivefred

I am not gonna be so nice with you this time. After all, travelling is also about chance, discovering, etc...Some of you might not find a particular charm to the capital city of Cambodia. It took me quite a while to appreciate it. If you wander about the town, you might discover the vietnamese quarter. which has nothing to compare with the rest of the town: Super clean, peaceful. I discovered it by chance but It was so nice that I spent hours drinking sugar cane sirup ( with safe ice !!) Wonderful place indeed.Hope you'll find it. It may be difficult as ost of the cambodian people won't tell you where it is because of some tensions with the vietnamese community.Good luck.

Visit in the Central New market - Psar Tmei

by manil51

This unique, art-deco style building was completed in 1937 and is a Phnom Penh landmark. The entrance is lined with souvenir merchants hawking everything from T-shirts and postcards to silver curios and kramas. Inside is a dazzling display of jewels and gold. Electronic goods, stationery, secondhand clothes and flowers are also in ample supply.
