Mekong Islands

by skydivefred

There are quite a few islands on the Mekong river and NOBODY goes there !!! There are often authentic, unspoiled villages there and the people are very friendly. The tricky thing is to find out how to get there. Most of the time you'll find small local boats that do the shuttle for the local people. Just find out . ;-))

Explore a temple with no tourists! Beng MeLea

by Bali-Babe

Beng MeLea is an amazing temple that is rarely visited. It is located a few hours away from Siem Reap and Angkor Wat, where the jungle just grows right up through the remains of the temple. If you like the Ta Prahm temple in the Angkor complex, you will absoluted love Beng Melea. Beng Melea was rediscovered only last year, and the temple has not been rebuilt. Jungle roots are forcing stones from the temple upwards, and children from the area will escort you through the complex, directing you to which stones to step on. Nothing is roped off or really safe. It is very hot there, even though the jungle is shielding you from the sun. The sound of the bugs, or the jungle orchestra can be overwhelming, which adds to the mystere and adventure.Be careful where you step! Don't go off the paths because of the land mines. This area has mostly been cleared of the mines, but don't take any chances!...

2 ways Off the beaten path

by skydivefred

Along the main roads (Where every white person stick on) you will see, notice porticoes or sort off "doors" (see pictures) that will lead you either to a pagoda (if you see a multicoloured flag) or a village. I don't know why but nobody goes there, this is so easy!! you will see some real, genuine cambodian slice of life there. The second way, go off the sealed road, hardly anyone there either. Actually, In cambodia, if you tell yourself, I don't want to go that way, I think that is where YOU WANT to go !!!!!!!! and where interesting stuff happen

Kampot

by Intrepidtraveler

This town didn't hold much in the way of attractions but it was so beautiful with amazing atmosphere. It felt like home to me! The french architecture was beautiful (although crumbling) and the pigs roaming the streets made me laugh! I rented a bicycle and rode around the gravel roads as well as into some of the small villages. A trip to a beautiful temple where I talked with a young monk teaching English was incredible. He was the first monk I had encountered curious about us and eager to practice his English.

A Different Floating Village

by aukjejetty

Most visitors to Cambodia will see some of the floating villages near Siem Reap or near Battambang. There is also a less frequently visited Vietnamese floating village along the road from Phnom Penh to Battambang.Along that road, in Pursat Province, is a town called Krakow. This town has a dirtroad leading towards Kompong Luong is an entire commune of five floating villages with a population of ten thousand. It is possible to visit the villages by boat, there is no place to stay in the villages itself.

Kobal Spien

by Rodan44

Definitely off the beaten path, Kobal Spean literally means ‘the head of the river’ and is one of the two ‘rivers of 1000 lingas’. The site is essentially a river that has numerous small lingas (phalluses) carved into the stone bed. It was believed that the lingas spiritually 'fertilized' the waters that fed the Eastern Baray and irrigated the rice fields below. There are also carvings of Buddha and Buddhist images in the surrounding rocks that date from a later period than the lingas, although many of these have been very recently vandalized.A great place to get away from the crowds of tourists and experience the peaceful Cambodian countryside. You will pass many typical Cambodian rural villages on the way to the site. The site lies 12km beyond Banteay Srei (50km from Siem Reap), and the road after Banteay Srei is unpaved and treacherous. Since it is quite out of the way, I recommend...

Phnom Kulen

by bijo69

A great place about 50km from Siem Reap, with temples and waterfalls. There's a 5m long statue of Buddha on top of a peak. When I visited the place there were no tourists at all, but it might have changed since 2000.
