Bokor National Park

by AndreSTGT

The trip to the old French hill station in Bokor National Park was one of the hardest trips in my life. With a rented motorbike (7$), me and a friend tackled the "road" up to Bokor, which obviously hadn't been repaired since the French left. On the way up through the jungle there were wonderful vistas over the coast. Up on the mountain, however, it was misty, rainy and very cold. Exploring the ruins of the old French colonial hotel in this spooky atmosphere was an unforgettable experience and we were the only people up there. On our way back it rained incessantly and the road became virtually unnavigable. And so the inevitable happened, one rock too many in the way, and the day ended in Kampot hospital, an old colonial building which looked like a place where people die rather than a place where they get healed. To my big surprise there was a young doctor who was fluent in French and in...

Cruise the countryside on a moto bike

by selfishman

Once you leave Siem Reap after experiencing Angkor Wat, you realize that other, often overloked treasure of this country is it's people. Rent a moto bike for the day and cruise through the countryside in the provinces. This is always my favorite activity in Cambodia. My favorite place for this was Kratie. You can rent a moto from just about any guest house for US$3-5 a day and drive along the dirt road to visit the freshwater Irrawadday (check the spelling) dolphins. Along the way you can cruise through the villages and stop wherevever you like to check out the countryside and chat with the people. There is also an area on the river with little bamboo huts on the river where you can have a little bite to eat and relax in the river.

Relax among the temples

by SirRichard

There are so many temples and they are so huge that you will never find them too crowded. Most of the time, you will find yourself alone in the temple, and that makes an ideal place to sit and read a bit, update your diary, or just rest, as they are cool inside and shady.

Sunrise at the temples

by SirRichard

Early morning is a perfect time to visit Angkor Temples, as it is yet not so hot and you will avoid some (not all) the tourists. But it's got to be real early, as soon the buses of visitors will arrive. This sunrise time is kind of magical, there is a quiet atmosphere all around, the food stall are not open yet and you can see daily life of the monks cming and going...

Daytrips to Tonle Sap lake

by SirRichard

If you have a few days left here after visiting temples, you can take a day off to the Lake (one of the biggest in Asia) and see the many canals and how people live in huts over the waters.Better in rainy season, as the water is higher.

Training the Kids

by bkoon

The kids in school were trained in various areas from the gardening experience. The teacher efectively distributed jobs to the kids and each kid had their role to perform. Like for this kid in the picture, he was tasked, together with 3 other peers, to obtain water from the smll pond just outside the school. They fetched water in their sprinkers to water the plants they planted.

Gardening

by bkoon

At the side of the school compound, there was a huge plot of land where a group of students and a teacher were working on. They were performing some gardening tasks. Apparently, the teacher was teaching the kids how to do gardening, planting, etc.As we approached the group of students, the rest of the students rushed out of their classrooms and all gathered there. The kids were just so cute and they really the most wonderful brings on earth. Always so curious.

School Classroom

by bkoon

When we entered the classrooms, the kids were so shy. All of them rushed back to their seats and when we wanted to take pictures, all tend to shun away.Typically, a classroom can accommodate some 40 students.

School Girls

by bkoon

When we entered the school, our intention was not to disrupt any classes or whatsoever. However, when we entered, the entire school "stopped functioning". All the school children rushed out from their classrooms. The teachers were not in the classrooms then. I guessed it was break time when we arrived. The village kids were very curious and of course camera-shy.

Village School at Battambang

by bkoon

I had indicated that visting a village school is one of the activities which you must not miss if you are visiting Cambodia. The school was build on a plot of empty land right smack in the middle of a village. It has a big compund and it is brand new. When I went, the official school term had not started and kids were already going to school every day.
