Siem Reap (Angkor Wat)

by worldtraveler55

Angkor WatAngkor Wat is simply unique, a stunning blend of spirituality and symmetry, an enduring example of man's devotion to his gods.It is the largest and undoubtedly the most breathtaking of the monuments of Angkor, widely believed to be the largest religious structure in the world. It is also the best-preserved temple at Angkor, as it was never abandoned to the elements, and repeated visits are always rewarded with previously unnoticed details. Most probably it was constructed as a funerary temple for Suryavarman II (reigned 1112 - 1152) to honour Vishnu, the Hindu deity with whom the king identified. The most significant point is that the temple is oriented towards the west. west is symbolically the direction of death, which once led a large number of scholars to conclude that Angkor Wat must have existed primarily as a tomb. This idea was supported by the fact that the magnificent...

Kep (Koh Tonsay)

by worldtraveler55

Koh TonsayKoh Tonsay (Rabit island) is a short boat ride off the coast to Kep and is so named because locals say it resembles a rabbit. It has several beaches and it is possible to stay with local families, as long as you can agree on a price for food and lodging.Malaria is prevalent on most islands off Cambodia's coast, so come prepared with a bucket of repellent and a mosquito net.

Takeo (Angkor Borei)

by worldtraveler55

Angkor Borei Angkor Borei was know as Vyadhapura when it served as the capital of Water Chenla in the 8th century, one of several competing kingdoms in the pre-Angkorian era.It is one of the earliest pre-Angkorian sites in Cambodia, dating back to the 5th century.Angkor Borei is actually a small modern town, but in this instance it is used to refer to the remains of an ancient walled city in the vicinity. The town has a small museum, set up with assistance from the European Union in 1997.

Bit of everything

by lainyfav

Phnom Penh:If you're a backpacker, stay in the Boengkak lake area, sitting out on the hostels deck on the water, drinking a few beers and just hanging with your mates is something i will always remember when i stayed in that area. Its setup of the area is definitely a different experience to most places, its like living in a shanty town, narrow dirt roads, with famalies living in houses on same strip as well as it having restaurants and bars flooded along it. personal favourite bar in the area is the magic elephant!!!I definitely reccommend going to the killing fields and tuol sleng, its a huge part of their history, and if you're a modern history buff like me you'll really appreciate it, learning about it from a textbook and actually being there is huge experience. The royal palace is also great to go check out and then have a drink and bite down by the tonle sap riverSiem Reap:Angkor...

Siem Reap (Other Temples)

by worldtraveler55

Other TemplesThere are a lot more temples spread throughout the large planes around Angkor.Visiting these monuments brings you off the beaten paths, where you will encounter very less tourists, and you can meet the local people in there daily life.To the north-east side of Siem Reap are the temples off Banteay Samré, Phnom Bok and Chau Srei Vibol.About 13 km south-east of Siem Reap are the monuments of Rolous, which served as Indravarman I's (reigned 877 - 889) capital and are among the earliest large, permanent temples built by the Kmers. Here you can find Bakong, Preah Ko and LoleiThe West Baray is about 11 km North-West of Siem Reap. Situated here is Ak Yum, the earliest site in the area. (dating from the seventh century) For more information about these temples see Other Temples

Maximising Thailand and Cambodia in a couple weeks

by seagypsy

Most travelers use Bangkok as a hub and then book roundtrip air flights to Cambodia (Phnom Penh or Siem Reap) from there. But you might be able to 'open jaw' your ticket if you use a good travel agent. This would save you the hassle, cost, time of having to return to the city you started in.However, Thai Air Asia is an excellent budget airlines that offers dirt cheap flights between BKK and Phnom Penh provided that you book online well in advance. In fact, right now they are offering promo flights already for the beginning of next year BUT you have to purchase within the next several days. They offer several flights a day to PP but I'd recommend their early morning departure which then gives you a full day to visit PP. Then you can take the 4.5-5 hour luxury VIP bus to Siem Reap for Angkor and via this transport get a sense of the countryside. I'd highly recommend at least 3 days for...

Siem Reap (Big Circuit)

by worldtraveler55

Big CircuitThere are a lot of temples spread throughout the forest around Angkor.Back in the early days of tourism, the problem of what to see and in what order was left to two basic temple courses; The Little Circuit and the Big Circuit. It's difficult to imagine that anyone follows these to the letter any more, but in their time they were an essential component of the Angkor experience and were often undertaken on the back of an elephant.I have used this idea for ordering the other temples in my travelogues-pages.The Big Circuit is an extension of the little Circuit; where the latter exits at the east gate of the walled city of Angkor Thom, the Big Circuit exits at the north gate and continues to Preah Khan and Preah Neak Pean, east to Ta Som then south via the East Mebon to Preah Rup and finally returns to Angkor Wat via Srah Srang and Prasar Kravan. For more information about these...

It's difficult to imagine that anyone follows these to the letter any more, but in their time they were an essential component of the Angkor experience and were often undertaken on the back of an elephant.I have used this idea for ordering the other temples in my travelogues-pages.The Little Circuit begins at Angkor Wat and heads north to Phnom Bakheng and Baksei Chamkrong; then entering Angkor Thom via the South Gate and leaving via the Victoty Gate heading to Chau Say Tevoda, Thommanon, Spean Tma and Ta Keo; turning south to Ta Prohm and Bantey Kdei and finally returns to Angkor Wat.For more information about these temples see Little Circuit

Siem Reap (Angkor Thom)

by worldtraveler55

Angkor ThomThe fortified city of Angkor Thom (meaning; Great Angkor or Great City), some 10 sq km in extent, was built by Angkor's greatest king Jayavarman Vii (reigned 1181 - 1220, who cam to power just after the disastrous sacking of the previous Kmer capital by the Chams.Centred on the Bayon, Angkor Thom is enclosed by a jayagin (square wall) 8m high and 12 km in length and encircled by a jayasindhu (moat) 100m wide, said to have been inhabited by fierce crocodiles. This is yet another monumental expression of Mt Meru surrounded by the oceans. For more information about see Angkor Thom - BayonIn the centre of the walled enclosure are the city's most important monuments, including The Baphuon, The Royal Enclosure, Phimeanakas, Terrace of Elephants, Terrace of the Leper King and Prasat Suor Prat. For more information upon these temples see Temples of Angkor Thom

Hi,better make it 2-3 days for PP and 4-5 for Siem Reap! There is a lot to explore in SR, the surroundings are stunning as well as some small villages, and the various temples may need more than a week, if you want to see only some of them more in detail (to recommend !)Find a list of the uncredible number of monuments here athttp://tinyurl.com/4nvg6gEnjoy!
