ducks on the beach? by richiecdisc We generally had a carefree time in Cambodia, but there was on instance that nearly ruined our trip. We wanted to go to jungle outpost Banlung in the far north of the country by local buses and boats. To save time, we had planned on flying back to Phnom Penh. Since the flights were on a very limited schedule, we found it would be more convenient to fly up and take the boat/bus trip back. So, we booked the ticket and headedly to the airport the next morning with no worries. When we went to check in, we were told that the ticket was not valid as it was issued in Siem Reap, not Phnom Penh. I calmly explained we had just bought the ticket in PP the previous morning. The counter person was adamant that it was not the case. I asked to talk to a manager and was joined by another traveler in the same predicament. The manager explained that some unscrupulous travel agencies sold these invalid tickets to travelers heading north with one-way flights. They figured that they would never see them again and that most would just fork over the money at the airport for the ticket. The problem was that it was a real issued ticket, just from the wrong city. This seemed like a real flaw in the system to me if they were allowing such agencies to even sell their ticket! I explained that we had come halfway around the world to Cambodia and now we were having our trips ruined by what could be easily rectified by them. The flight was half-empty so why not just give us a new ticket and then come down hard on the agency for selling an obvious scam ticket. That was impossible they said, we would have to either pay for a new ticket and collect the money from the agency on our return or go back and get our money now and return for a later flight. The only problem with that logic was there were no more flights until the following week!
We forced the manager to call the agency while we were there and explain we were coming for a refund. We went back and demanded not only the money for the ticket but also the taxi fare to and from the airport, which he sheepishly handed over. So, we missed a trip to the jungle for what is one real lag behind Western standards in the terms of customer service.
We got back into town and didn't want to spend more time in Phnom Penh so we headed to the bus terminal and took the next bus to anywhere it was going. It just happened to be Sihanoukville and the rest is beachy history. As you can see, even ducks enjoy the beach in Cambodia. I thought seeing monks on the beach was strange enough but monks AND ducks together....that just might have topped the jungle after all. ;) Leave a Comment

glue sniffing professional beggars by prikje Don't give money to street beggars you get overrun by lots of them if they see you give something. And trust me they do see every move you make! The Cambodians are masters in ripping you off and begging like professionals in Angkor and Phnom Penh. I watched a group of kids while sitting in a pub and saw how they went to pick up there little sister and head for a ignorant tourist to collect with the phrase " Njam Njam". After they cash in,they jumped on a tuk-tuk bought some glue or something and inhaled it with a plastic bag.
Never talk to them, don't look at them a keep a steady pase.
Don't be as hard as a rock. The people are very poor but if you wanna help buy a postcard from organisations like AAD ( Angkor association of the disabled) the don't beg but work for money. Being in Cambodian you spend money for their economy.Eat at a local restaurant or buy local. But by giving money to beggars they will always find that the easy way to earn money and all the toursit after you will be harrassed. There are several boy touts at the ferry point at Siem Reap. They will attempt to guide you to the boat and 'help' you carry your luggage to the back of the boat. And then demand an outrageous $1 for this. Hence, never pass off your bags to any of them. Carry your own bags and deposit them to the bag of the boat no matter what these boys say. Remember that nothing is free in Cambodia and these boys are taking advantage of gulliable travellers. If you don't want the fuss of arguing over payment or non-payment, don't do it in the first place. Carry your own luggage. Leave a Comment

Sunset Madness Phnom Bakheng by herzog63 The scene at the bottom of the hill right around sunset is total Madness. There are so many people that prices for the touristy junk increases. You will be able to see Tourist buses, cars, trucks, motorcyles and bicycles lind up for as far as the eye can see along the road during the high season just before sunset. This isn't the place to buy your touristy junk. But I guess it is helping the local economy if you do??
There are great views of Angkor Wat from the top of the hill. But in order to properly photograph Angkor Wat you will need a BIG lense for your camera but the sunsets are beautiful indeed!! Our sunset wasn't the Super Fantastic one that I had hope for. If you want to experience Phnom Bakheng with any other tourists just climb up there during the heat of the afternoon and you'll be all alone!! Leave a Comment

Cheap and so nice food. by skydivefred If you are used to sticking to touristic places, you won't find anything particular about the prices of the meals there but if you are on a budget travel you should know that a 4$ dish can be put down to 1/2 $. They will just tell you " don't tell anybody" !!! I am not telling anybody, just VTbody !!!!!!! LOL
There is nothing unbearable to that experience !!! Just chat with the lady far off the other tourists and have a big smile, discuss, they speak perfect English and it should be enough .
Buy some dishes at Siem reap before you go to Ankor; Leave a Comment

Reconstruction workis everywhere!-Cambodia by Groverdean If you are looking at a ruin and part of it looks very new, chances are it probably is! Disappointingly, part of the old ruins are being rebuilt. A temple really never has the same feel to it ever again as far as I'm concerned. Leave a Comment

Arriving from Bangkok directly to Siem Reap you´ll be brought to a hotel where they get comission for you. Mostly it´s in the middle of no where and it will be allready dark outside when you arrive so the chance for you to change accomodation are not very high, but try to find outside a motorbike which brings you to the hotel of your choice. We went from bangkok to poipet boarder by bus. We then walked across the boarder to cambodia. On the other side we got a small bus that we thought was taking us to siem reap. On the bus we had a very friendly local stand at the front and said he was our "group leader'. He told us a few facts about cambodia and said that you must have riel as that is what they mainly excepy as their currency and you could not use baht. Helpfuly they stopped at an exchange place 5 mins down the road....it was an empty shop with a small counter. The exchange rate was VERY LOW but as we all thought we needed reil we changed our money. We thought that maybe this would be the case in Cambodia. i personaly gave 30 pounds worth of Baht and got 20 pounds of riel in exchange!!!! DO NOT CHANGE MONEY!! You don't need riel unless you have no US dollar. In the city there are normal exchange places with proper rates. They then put us on our real bus and we saw them hand the driver a handful of Baht. We worked out that the con men pay our real driver money so that they can pick us up from the boarder in their bus....rip off our money...then hand us to the real driver. We never saw our 'group leader' again after we changed our money Leave a Comment

The official currency of cambodia is the Riel. Re-introduced in 1979 there are about (when I was there) 4000 to the UD$. They come in: 50 100 200 500 1000 2000 5000 10000 20000 50000 100000 Because of low prices its unusual to find ones above 20000, and if you have one you'll find it difficult to change. The unofficial currency is the US dollar. So get used to paying in dollars and getting your change in Riel's (lots and lots of Riels). Remenber to get rid of them before leaving the country. Apart from souveniers, no one will want them.

Bati Lake by squidchip If going to Tonle Bati and decide to have lunch in the village on the lake make sure you agree on pricing before you order. If not your bill may come to $20 US dollars or more. My driver made sure we agreed beforehand as not to get overcharged. Leave a Comment
