Arriving from the North (Thailand)

by Wanderboy43

I was able to get my Cambodian Visa (30 days) at the small border from Thai City Pakse. I got a 5:50am bus to the border, and paid $25 for the VISA.Unfortunately, I missed the only bus headed to Siem Riep (the city at Angkor Wat). The scene at teh border is pretty primative; just dirt roads and no sign of busses or taxis.I ended up getting driven all around "looking" for a bus, only to end up getting charged $2.50 for use of the scooter.I felt pretty ripped off, and just ended ditching the first guy and found someone else who would just get me out of the border town. It was about a one hour ride to the next big town where I caught a ride in a shared taxi ($4.00) all the way to Siem Reip the next morning.

Finding Transport

by PA68

You never need to look for to find transport in Cambodia. You will be constanly asked by "moto" drivers if you need a motorbike. For longer journeys you should head to one of the towns transport stops where share-taxis, pickups and minibuses will all by competing for your business. Make sure you have a rough idea of the fare before entering into negotiations with taxi drivers. You'll also find that you have less time to wait for taxis and pick-ups to fill up if you go to the transport stop early in the morning.

You're in for a bumpy ride

by brighteyes79

There is only about 300 kms of paved roads in Cambodia. The rest of the roads are dirtroads with huge potholes. We mostly took busses to get around and it was always some experience! The drive from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh was about 7 hours of shaking! The only nice road is between Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville: 250 kms paved roads! The trip from Sihanoukville back to Bangkok was something else. It took us more than 15 hours. We left at 6:30 am in a minibus packed with 10 people plus their luggage, no aircon (just open windows)! I couldn't care less not to have aircon, but since there are only dirtroads, we had a big layer of sand and dust on our body by the end of the ride. The scenery was beautiful though. And the kids on the side of the road were smiling and waiving when we drove by.We had to cross 4 or 5 rivers before getting to the southern border with Thailand. The "boats" are pretty...

Bus trips are LONG and ROUGH

by FireMike

Took two bus trips. From the border with Vietnam to Siem Ream and another from SR to Thailand border. Both around 10 hours of the roughest , dirtiest, hottest, most uncomfortable transportation I have ever experienced. And this is considered the NATIONAL HIGHWAY! On one of the trips, the front of the bus fell off and we didn't even notice until we stopped for lunch. A fine red dust came in all the windows (which were open because the AC was broken) and coated everything! You can cover the same distance by boat but it is much more expensive, but probably worth it.

Camry - no Number Plate

by ngsway

The camry you see around Poipet and Siem Reap are mostly without number plat. I was told that these cars are stolen from neighbouring country and used here illegally..... That's why, this car is driven by a driver on the right when in Cambodia, car is left driven and keep left!!!

Rip off drivers

by stedeb

Make sure you agree on a price before you take any kind of transport in PP. We agreed on a price to the Russian Market with a tuk tuk driver who insisted he took us to the Central Market to which we could of easily walked. The 4 of us (all women) would not budge from the tuk tuk until he took us back to the Russian Market right back past our hotel. Although i knew from the map he was going the wrong way I even shoved the map in his face he would not listen. Just be firm stand your ground and you will be ok. Needless to say he didn't wait for a retunr fare!!!

Poipet to Siem Reap - 'Camry'

by ngsway

To get to Siem Reap from Poipet, we hire a 'Camry'. It cost THB1100 for a car. Notice that the car is without any car number plate. This is because it is actually illegal car that was most probably stolen in Thailand and smuggled into Cambodia.A must read for anyone who is planning overland trip from Thailand is Gordon Sharpless's webpage at http://www.talesofasia.com/cambodia-overland-bkksr.htmI 'study' it and also brought along a printed copy. It is so in details that I don't think my overland trip into Cambodia can go so smoothly without it.

Cambodia's highway

by ngsway

What cambodia call highway might just be a straight dirt road as seen here in the picture. It is red in color and if it rains, will be covered with portholes of different size and depth! When it is not raining, these powderly dirt will fly whenever a car pass by. Driving behind another car, the view will be blinded by the 'red smoke' created.....

Bumpy Bus Rides

by D_Shannon

I have never, NEVER, seen roads as bad as those in Cambodia. Our bus ride from PP to Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam stands out as a broncho good time, and a friend who had a 10 bus ride from PP to Siem Reap claims permanent spinal damage. Wear a sports bra and try to get in the front seat, next to the driver.

Crossing the Mekong

by SirRichard

On the way from Phnom Penh to Vietnam by bus, you will cross the Mekong River by ferry. You don't have to get down from the bus, as it goes on the ferry. But is a good chance to take a walk around and watch the local life at both shores and in the boat. Many street vendors will come into the bus offering food and drink.
