The boat through Tonle Sap

by SirRichard

The fastest overland way from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh is the tourist boat that goes along the Tonle Sap lake and river. It takes 5 hours and costs 22 USD. There is one daily in both directions. Ask for tickets at any guesthouse or travel agency. Ask them to include the transport to the boat in the price, as there is a 30 minutes drive to the pier. You can travel inside the long boat or on the roof (as I did). On the roof is nicer, but don't forget to bring your sun lotion!!!! I did, and I peeled off completely the following week :-((When arriving in Phnom Penh you will be "welcomed" by many Ghesthouses' guys, asking you to go to theirs. They will take you to the guesthouse by car. A good choice is to look at your guidebook in advance, find the one of the guesthouse you have choosen and go directly for him... or just take the chance and go with the first one. Narim and Continental are good...

Overland from Thailand

by SirRichard

To reach Siem Reap (Angkor) from Thailand there is no direct bus. You have to take a regular bus from Morchit station in Bangkok to Aranyaprathet (164 baths, 4 hours). There you must take a moto or tuktuk to the Cambodian border (6 kms, 50 Baths). Then you pass the customs and enter Cambodia, get the Visa there (20 USD) and...Welcome to the Chaos! (see next tip)

Highway 6

by SirRichard

This is the road between Sisophon and Siem Reap. One of the worst I've been to. And even worse when it rains (and it did!!)I was in the back of the pickup, open air, with 5 cambodian women on their way to the market, sitting on pineapple and rambutan sacks, bunping up and down, raining... for 3 eternal hours!!!!But it was fun, fun as hell, I would do it again (but will bring a mattress this time, LOL

Highway 5

by SirRichard

This is the road from the thai border to Phnom Penh. You will follow it till Sisophon, where the car takes the Highway 6 to Siem Reap.If you think this dirty road is bumpy, wait for the 6!!! (see next tip).

Touts and pick ups

by SirRichard

The best way is to take a motorbike as soon as you pass the border. Tell the driver you are going to Siem Reap and want a pick up or a Camry (taxi). He will take you to the place where the cars are, away from (this) touts. There, if you are lucky enough, there will be fewer touts. Go to the FULLEST car, as this will be the first to leave. Bargain the price: for references, look at the website below. And there you are! On the road at Highway 5 & 6, some of the worst roads in Asia!! (see next pic)

Thai-Cambodia border

by SirRichard

Once you pass the border Gate, you will be hassled here and there by many touts taking you to their transport. There is not "official" public transport, so there is a mafia controlling every possible private transport. There are basically 3:- Buses: cheap but slow and uncomfortable.- PickUps: cheap but not very comfortable, though quick (3 hours and a half). You will have to share the space with others. They stop (and change pickup) in Sisiphon, half the way.- Taxis (Camrys). The most comfortable and quick, though expensive. You can hire a whole taxi (about 1000 Baths) or share it, if you wait for other travelers. 3 hours directly to Siem Reap. But how do you deal with touts? (see next tip)

Liften, liften, liften :)

by ukirsari

I hear so many "brave" stories about liften --asking drivers to take them-- from Poi Pet to Siem Reap and vice-versa. From myself, it's not recommended. I prefer rent a Toyota Camry Lumiere. It's nice and comfy.

Daily flight service from airlines

by ukirsari

There are several airlines has direct flight from Bangkok to Cambodia. Also from my country (Indonesia) to Cambodia. From Garuda Indonesia (GA), Thai Airlines (TG), Siem Reap Air and Cambodia Air. The price from Jakarta (INA) to Phnom Penh (Cambodia) is about USD321. And I use GA to Bangkok (USD210 - 250) then continuing to Cambodia by overland.

Transportation In Cambodia

by honestjohn

Maybe you can not believe that in the cities of Cambodia, even in Phnom Penh, Shihanuke Ville, there is no bus for public transportation. There is only some long distance bus between some cities. Don't expect how clean or new the bus will be. Taxi is very popular in the country, but I must tell you that the taxi there is called motortaxi, because most taxi is motorcycle. there is car taxi only in the airport. Inside city, you can hire a motorcycle for your traveling. (I am sorry I never hire one, our company has its own car. I can drive myself.)

The Bamboo Train

by PA68

One of the most interesting journeys I took in Cambodia was aboard the Bamboo train. After a day of sightseeing around Battambang my moto driver announced that we would get the "Bamboo train" back into town. When i asked what that was he pointed to the contraption in the photo. They place two sets of wheels on the rails, add a bamboo platform and attach a motor. Once it's loaded it's ready to go. If you meet another Bamboo Train coming the other way then its a case of heaviest load wins. The loser has to remove their train from the rails. Great!
