If you leave for Thailand...

by Juan_Gmo

If you leave for Thailand overland the best part (if not only) is through Poipet-Aranyathrapet. If leaving from Phnom Penh reach a pick up at the Central Market early in the morning and after a 13-hour-drive arrive in Poipet. Border is closed at 5:00 PM, you may not get there on time. From Siem Reap to Phnom Penh is worth taking the fast boat. Ankor and Phnom Penh are best travelled by motorcycle. It´s cheap! Don´t forget to invite your chauffer to eat.

by rm2co

I flew by Malaysian Airlines from Kuala Lumpur to Phnom Penh. Probably the most comfortable way of getting there! From Phnom Penh's Pochentong Airport, it costs US$5 by the airport taxi to get into Phnom Penh's city centre. Between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, express boats were used (US$25 one way). Some guest houses can get you the tickets for about US$22-23. Only 1 service daily, which leaves at 7.00am from the jetty south of the Japanese Friendship bridge. Takes about 4-5 hours to get you from Phnom Penh to a floating pier on Tonle Sap Lake. From that pier, you will be hassled by touts from the numerous guest houses. Pick one and follow him. You will then transfer onto smaller boats for a short 5 minute ride to a 'jetty' of sorts, consisting of 2 planks, in the midst of a stinking fishing village (see picture). Thereafter, transfer to motorbikes for a 20 minute ride into Siem Reap. The...

I went to Siem Reap from...

by FrodeK

I went to Siem Reap from Bangkok. I stayed at Khao San road, this street is full of travel agencies. I payed about 1000 baht for the visa, and 150 baht for the bus. I heard people paying in the range of 100 baht up to 350 for the bus. So you should shop around...then again it's really ridiculously cheap anyway. We had a van from Khao San to the border Poipet. It took about 6 hours, 350 kilometers. One stop on the way for food. Then at the border we were met by two guys from Cambodia. They led us through passportcontrols and to a guesthouse were we waited for 1 hour. From there we got into a new van/minibus and drove for another 6 hours, 150 kilometers. The roads are bad! With two stops one for food and one to make sure we got to Siem Reap after dark. The price of the bus is this cheap because they stop at certain restaurants on the way and they take you to a certain guesthouse....

by mikinho

Air plane from Saigon was something like $75 I think (I may remember wrong). The bus going from Kim Cafe in Saigon is something like $10 or $15. When I was there, there was also a new road - by boat combined with a Vietnam Mekong trip. It was very new, though, so don't know if it took up.Make sure your motorbike taxi understand where you want to go. As they want the deal, they will say 'yes' to anything, then will drive around town for hours as they really didn't understand a word. They will still want you to pay them even if they drop you out in the blue. The problem is not willingness, it's English. Writing the address down doesn't help as they usually can't read. Try to stick to very simple terms which they will know. Don't say 'river front', say 'FCC' - that's the French Correspondant Club on the river front, and this they will understand.I like bicycle, so I rent one at the Capitol...

by yeikloen

There are some tour agent in Khoa San road giving real good deals from Bangkok to Siem Reap for as low as 150bt.Or you can do your own way by taking a bus from Northen Eastern(ground floor - northern) Bus Station in Bangkok to Aranyeprathet. Take a 'TukTuk' about 30bt to the border about 3km away. Walk across the border and walk out to the main roundabout where you can find van park to Siem Reap. Becareful of kids approching you...!!!And you can take a ferry (mind you that ferry means speed boat without roof) to Battambang which is a very scenic journey across the Tonle Sap lake, Vietnamese Floating Village, and boat people along the river to Battambang for USD12There are Bike, Moto-Taxi, Taxi and Van. We took Moto-Taxi for 3 days travelling around Angkor for USD10per day (2 person). The only bad thing is, it was slow...:).

What about this antique...

by bagan

What about this antique Antonov Turbolev of Presidential Airlines or Phnom Penh Airways connecting Phnom Penh to Ratanakiri? So dirty and battered that up to this time I cannot believe that it's really flown. The impressive advertising leaflet reported: our flights are the mark of safety, because we tried our aircrafts for numberless hours...After all is the only mean to reach the enchanting Ratanakiri region.

Getting to/from Phnom Penh...

by bagan

Getting to/from Phnom Penh from Siem Reap by boat, you will arrive at destination really exhausted. In fact prepare you to stay 4/5 hours seated on the metal top of the speedy boat, with no mat, maybe wet from river water and sure deaf at destination if dont bring with you earplugs... But you can also admire the river villages life.

Rent a motorcycle in Siem Reap...

by bagan

Rent a motorcycle in Siem Reap and Ban Lung. Most roads are a little more then beaten trail, and I suggest never go in Cambodia by yourself during rain season... Remember to dress old clothes, when you drive because maybe you must throw them away at yr return. In Rattanakiri region all sites are well marked with road sign. In Siem Reap/Angkor archeological zone they are not so clear...Make attention over all if you go to Kobal Spien, because the only indication is a large board on the left of the road, written in cambogian alphabet...To look after your moto when you are visiting the temple, park it near a stall and give 500riel.

fly in and out of the country.. it's the safest way..to get around a town, take the moto or cyclo.. to get to another town.. the bus is cheap though not very comfortable.. other alternative for some places is the boat (e.g. phnom penh - siem reap.. take the express boat..)
