Rent a motorcycle in Siem Reap...

by bagan

Rent a motorcycle in Siem Reap and Ban Lung. Most roads are a little more then beaten trail, and I suggest never go in Cambodia by yourself during rain season... Remember to dress old clothes, when you drive because maybe you must throw them away at yr return. In Rattanakiri region all sites are well marked with road sign. In Siem Reap/Angkor archeological zone they are not so clear...Make attention over all if you go to Kobal Spien, because the only indication is a large board on the left of the road, written in cambogian alphabet...To look after your moto when you are visiting the temple, park it near a stall and give 500riel.

fly in and out of the country.. it's the safest way..to get around a town, take the moto or cyclo.. to get to another town.. the bus is cheap though not very comfortable.. other alternative for some places is the boat (e.g. phnom penh - siem reap.. take the express boat..)

Coming from outside Asia, you cant fly direct to Cambodia. Most people fly into Bangkok or Singapore first. From Bangkok its about a 55 minute flight to Phnom Penh or over one days drive. Bangkok Airways sometimes has specials to P.Penh with an exit out of Siem Reap(you must get to S.Reap on your ownFlying is the quickest, The Roads in Cambodia outside Siem Reap(the town, not province), and Phnom Penh are in very poor shape. Royal Air Cambodia flies from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap, Battambang daily. Outside these towns the only options are riverboat transit or automobile. Just remember that 60 miles away, doesnt mean 1 hour, more like 2-3+

The road from Poi Pet to Siem...

by aramat

The road from Poi Pet to Siem Reap is in good condition now, so it takes about 3 hours from the border (if you don't break down - see tourist trap). You may take a train from Bangkok to Aranyaprathet (48 baht), walk accross the border and take a pickup or minibus from there (app. 50 USD for a pickup, so teh price depends on how many people share this fee), or a tourist bus from the Khao San Road. The second option may be cheaper (about 300 baht all the way), but not necessarily better. Rent a moto with a driver (app. 6 USD/day in & around Siem Reap) or a car (app. 20 USD/day in & around Siem Reap). Longer distances mean extra payment.

Again, I'm on a mini truck 14 hours from Bangkok to Siem Reap cost only 200 baht. I'm the one in orange shirt. Yeah ! The mini-bus from Bangkok leave every morning at 6am, reach the border of Poipet at about 12pm, waiting and waisting time at the borber for about 2 hours before continue on this mini-truck with muddy road.

Though direct buses are available from Bangkok to Siam Reap and back, it's best to use the public buses from Morchit terminal to Aranyaprathet and then take a coach to Siam Reap from the other side of the border.

Aranyapathet and Poipet...

by Ekahau

Aranyapathet and Poipet Border: It is no longer a problem crossing by land into Cambodia,I did this in Feb of 2001. I crossed into Cambodia from Thailand at Aranyapathet-Poipet Border starting in Bangkok; 'Aranyapathet' is over 200 km from Bangkok to the West. It takes around 4-5 hours to drive from Bangkok. You can easily take the public air-conditioned bus at the Northern Bus Terminal in Bangkok to Aranyapathet. Bus fee is at 160 Baht for air-con and half price for non-A/C. (take the Aircon) Taking the train from Central Railway Station of Bangkok called 'Hualumpong' is not a bad idea with two departures at 05:50 a.m. and 01:00 p.m. and arrive at 12:00 and 06:00 p.m., respectively. Only 3rd class and non-A/C trains running this route at the fare of 48 Baht. Some travel agents on Khaosan Road that are specialized on backpackers do offer this transport service by van at the cost of...

The boats are the way to go between Angkor and Phenom Phen. Or you can just hitch a ride with a family who lives in one. I guess? I never tried. But why not? Ay, probably not a good idea. Scratch that one.
