Mekong Delta tour, Saigon to Phnom Pehn

by susanpingu

The Mekong Delta (2day/1night) tour from Saigon to Phnom Pehn. A combination of bus and boats(smaller boats to tour coconut candy making & honey producing facilities on the canals and larger boat to go up the Mekong towards Cambodia) is used to ferry tourists around. You can book at the numerous travel agencies in Saigon or your guesthouse.

BKK to Poipet

by pesky_tourist

From Mochit Bus Terminal I took a 2nd Class bus (DON'T DO IT!) because there was one leaving in 5 minutes. One way Bt 178 as of 06APR06. Definitely take 1st Class for Bt207. Departed at 08.30 finally arriving Aranya Prathet, Thailand at 13.45. If taking the morning bus make sure you sit on the left side because of the sun. 2nd class picks up passengers in out of the way places and various spots in villages for standing room only. The driver pockets the fare. It can get very crowded and rather warm when there's 20+ people standing in the aisle. Make sure you bring snacks/drinks because there is no rest stop for this bus. Overall - a miserable ride.At Aranya bus station grab a tuk-tuk for Bt80 for the short ride to the border. From the drop off point it's about 500 meters to the Thai exit point. A few hundred meters across the bridge and you will find Cambodian Immigration on the right...

Tuk Tuk and car

by Joy1912

There are plenty of Tuk tuks on the streets. Try to negotiate for a good price before hopping onto one. Each Tuk tuk usually take either 2 or 4 passengers depending on the size.We visited the temples by engaging the driver from Red Piano Guesthouse. US$25 for a day, additional US$5 for further locations and transfer to airport. Transfer from airport is free. The driver, Phanna, brought us to temples and the boat trip. A nice guy. English speaking.

Moto

by Weener

Cheapest way to get around, particularly Siem Reap - Moto. Motobike with seat attached for up to 4 people (although entire families have been seen on the back!)If you are in Siem Reap, ask for Moto driver Mr Brown! He is a great character.

Avoid deafness! A warning !!!

by micropiglet

I f you are planning to take the jet boat from Siam Reap to Phnom Penh, I have a tip for you!I made this trip, and as advised, I avoided sitting inside the boat, as it has the potential to become a floating coffin. These boats have had collisions, sank etc, and getting out from inside is nigh on impossible.I chose to sit at the rear of the boat, as almost every other sqaure inch was occupied. I soon learnt why... The jet engine faces backwards (obviously, I suppose!) and sitting at the rear of the boat means that the full force of the noise of the engine is directed right at you. It was so loud it very quickly became physically painful. I spent six hours trying to stuff items of clothing into my ears to protect them! My ears were really damaged by the time I got to Phnom Penh, and I spent the first month in the city unable to hear properly, with a permanent high pitched whistle in my...

Hire a Moto and enjoy the Ride

by peitsing

Tourists are not allowed to drive their own motorcycles... The law actually changes depending on the accident rate.A motorbike complete with a driver can bring you to most places especially to most of the temples in and around Angkor wat as well as the Roules circle. Prices are negotiable and starts from USD10 for the day.....Some great motor drivers are:Veasna from Mandalay InnTula (loitering outside the Golden temple Villa)Vet of BattambongWill update their phone numbers soon. My "cambodian journal" left back home in Msia.. :P

Ko kong to Sihanoukville overland

by AndreSTGT

There is now (2005) an alternative to the ferry between Sihanoukville and the Thai border. A new highway has been built through the previously impenetrable mountain range. This being Cambodia, of course, new highway means a bumpy dirt track with four river crossings on ferries that wouldn't have looked different at the beginning of the 20th century. There are two ways of doing this trip. Either you can take one of Mealy Chenda's brand-new tourist vans (15$) but if you take a look at my 'Warning and Danger tip' you'll see how i feel about them. Much better, if more painful is to take the public van, a 9 hour nightmare with 25 people squeezed in like sardines in a derelict van. But the scenery is really nice and for me these kinds of trips are what travelling in Cambodia is all about.

We were lucky to bump into a group of strawmat sellers on the same boat as us... and they were kind enough to lay down their mats on the rooftops for us to lie down on... PLUS, we each got a free straw hats to protect us from the sun..The lesson of the day is.... A SMILE IS WORTH A THOUSAND WORDS!!!

Speed Boat from Battambong to Siam Reap

by peitsing

This route, according to various guide books, contain the best scenery and I absolutely agree!!There is only ONE boat which leaves at approximately 7 - 7.30 each morning from Battambong! For the same price (tourists price), you can opt to sit under the shade or on the rooftops! The rooftops is great FUN although you may want to "reserve" yourself a seat below coz the sun sure bakes down mercilessly in the afternoon. A 6-hour trip can prolong to 10 or so due to numerous delays...

Commission buses

by kanskje

Even though we were aware of the 'Scam Bus', we were picked up by a tourist guide with "official authorisation" from the Cambodian government (the guy in yellow in the picture). He guided us through the customs and took us to his office along with 20 other tourists. It looked very professional and did not seem like a scam. Well, the bus 'broke down' conveniently at a shop in the middle of nowhere and was stuck there for several hours. A 4 hour ride became 11 hours.Me and my friend stopped a car and paid him to get us to Siem Reap. The others told us however, as we met them the day after, that they were transported to the bus drivers guest house on pick up trucks and so to say forced to stay there. The ones that tried to leave were blocked in the doorway by four employees from the guesthouse and later chased and surrounded by scooters. (They found another guesthouse in the end). So be...
