Siem Reap Airport

by ellsasha

My first impression on arriving at the airport at Siem Reap was very negative. The people at the visa issue desks were austere and intimidating; however, I managed to stay composed despite one of immigration officers literally throwing my “landing card” back across the desk at me because I had accidentally presented it to him with my passport and visa application. Being treated so badly, I actually felt afraid and felt that I had made a mistake in coming to Cambodia. But once outside the airport I stepped into a world of beauty and intrigue, where the people were welcoming, warm, and kind. Don’t show irritation at the airport when you arrive, stay cool and simply get through the immigration process.

Camera, Purse Snatching, and Avian Flu

by ellsasha

I speak only for Siem Reap, and unfortunately there are now many instances of camera snatching from cyclists who are still on the roads at dusk and after dark. Also tourists in the local market and the “Old Market” in Siem Reap are vulnerable to both camera and purse snatching. I was advised by my driver to wear a vest when visiting the markets and keep “valuables” in pockets rather than carry them in sight of everyone; while a vest was uncomfortable in the heat it presented less temptation to the few unscrupulous individuals in the markets. Another thing to be wary of in the local market, is that it is very easy to step on live chickens which are for sale there. With reported cases of bird flu (although collection of data in Cambodia is difficult) infected birds shed influenza virus in their saliva, nasal secretions, and feces so “tread cautiously.”

Bus station at Siem Reap

by largerama

Tuk tuk and moto-taxi drivers at the bus station that serves Siem Reap behave appallingly on arrival. There is little if any order despite Police presence and they will crowd round you and your bags allowing no space to pick them up shoving hottle sheets in your face and shouting out all kinds of offers. Having been there before, I knew I could walk out on to the nearby main road and get a ride to where I wanted to go. Might be same cost but I refuse to give money to people in my face like this. But in order to get away, I had to phsyically push them out of the way and threaten people who grabbed me. Being big helps sometimes!!Other people I have talked to took a tuk tuk and driver stopped up the road and said he would take them no further unless they agreed that he was their driver for the temples the following day. Do not fall for this. Do as they do and get out. That is ludicrous...

Mealy Chenda

by AndreSTGT

Try to avoid using the services of Mealy Chenda. It has developed into an almost mafia-like tourist company that tries to 'thailandize' travelling in Cambodia by making sure that all travellers use their services (transport, tours, accommodation) only, instead of being individual using public transport, choosing your own place to stay; and their methods are quite dubious. I had an unpleasant encounter with one of their touts in Ko Kong, so i know what i'm talking about. I tried to take the local bus to Sihanoukville and had already agreed on a price with the driver when this guy from Mealy Chenda, who had been following me around trying to convince me to use their van, stepped in, threatened the driver and suddenly the price rose from 4$ to 400B. These people are criminals! Fair enough, Mealy Chenda transport is certainly much more comfortable (and expensive) than public transport, but...

Steep Crumbly Steps or Staircase

by peitsing

Ensure that shoes with good and proper grips are worn when going about the temples in the angkor valley...The steps are usually very steep as it was the belief that mortals should not be able to reach the gods so easily, and after centuries, most are crumbling or in dire need of repair...

Travelling Around

by travelswithsteve

I have just returned from 3 weeks travelling around Cambodia, during which time I felt safer than I would walking the backstreets of London at night.I saw a few people get into trouble, and a few get ripped off. From what I could gather, those that "suffered problems" should have been a little wiser, a little less brash, a little less loud, and a little more respectful. So I'm writing this to say: If you keep your wits about you, treat others as you would yourself and refrain form acting like a "plank" your gonna be OK.

Land Mines!

by Marco_Scarmentado

When wandering around Cambodia, be very careful not to wander off the beaten path: literally! One of the most depressing things about travelling in the countryside is seeing so many people missing arms and legs. And they are the lucky ones who still have their lives. Land mines are a very real and serious danger in many parts of Cambodia. This is true even among the ruins of the Angkor. Stick to roads and paths and you'll be fine.

Bird flu - Western bluff

by Pierangelo

In Cambodia there are some cases of bird flu but everybody don't mind and they eat chicken every day. There is a real possibility to contact the virus because in rural area there are a lot of chicken on the street and by dust humans can inhale chicken excrements.By the Italian health travel service they advice me to take malaria profilaxis but i didn't take (despite my own profession is doctor). Actually I saw few little mosquitos in Siem Reap; probably a real risk is during rain season in rural area.I was not aware for that but in Cambodia there was a DENGUE epidemy. It is transmitted like malaria by a mosquito (Aedes Egypti - in the pictuire).

Pick Pockets

by khaichung

Be carefull when you travel into Cambodia at the PoiPet border from Aranyaprathet. the custom areas are full with begger and pickpockets. they are actually being forced by parents to earn at the border by pick pocketing from tourist. don't be fooled by their young age, carrying another on their back, to act as decoy as the older one will put his/ her hand into bags or pockets. make sure all zippers are lock and pocket safely secure.Never go there during rush hour or travel in after dark.

Spider eating

by kat2000

If, like me, you are scared of spiders be very aware in the town of Skon there will be large platefuls of spiders for sale, so if you are on a bus of khmers it could be a nightmare for you to get trapped with lots of people eating spiders. I had the worst bus ride ever because of that it is Not nice when you are as scared of them as me. The way to avoid it is to get the tourist bus which is a little more expensive($6 instead of $3 Between Siam Reap & Phnom Penh, when we were there) but well worth it to avoid stopping in that time.
