Land Mines

by Maximilian21

Land Mines do still exist in Cambodia and in tragically large quantities. Very seldom in the piopulated towns but in rural areas they are quite common. If you venture out into these areas, please be wise enough to stick the well made paths if available

Driving in Cambodia

by Maximilian21

Traffic signs are for ornamentation only. Because of the chaotic nature of the main towns eg. Phnom Penh , the trafic can be quite bad and unfortunetly i saw several motorcycle accidents including one fatal. The where not preety. Most people dont wear helmets making them very vulnerable.

Sleep with your bike.

by skydivefred

Unlike many other destinations I had to closely watch my bike in Cambodia..Unfortunately, my experience tells me not to let your bike too much unattended. Some parts of my bikes were broken as it was in the hall of a hotel and some parts were stolen at the airport.....No matter how angry the hotel employees are I've always took my bike into my room as I did not believe the safety conditions high enough and I did not want to take more chances...Sad but too real.

Have you ever cycled on LATERITE dirt?

by skydivefred

Dear CyclistsAs soon as you whant to ride off the beaten tracks, you will hit some laterite road.LATERITE is a sort of dirt that can become hell according to different aspects and weather conditions. So get a load of this1/ Compacted, wet laterite: this is the BLACK ICE of southeast asia !!!! Even 4WD have some troubles at high speed. It is so slippery !!2/ Not compacted and wet: Probably the worst conditions to ride (if you can). The dirt glues onto your wheels until it becomes a compact cement that literally stuck the wheels of your bike. It is even difficult to get it off by hand !!! A nightmare (I don't have a photo of this cos I was too pissed off to take on !!!!!!)3/ Compacted and dry: Watch out for the overtaking car that make massive clouds of dustConclusion: You can't win against laterite !!! LOL

Road conditions 1

by skydivefred

Never believe what people say about the road conditions to where you want to go. The taxis will certainly lie to you in order to make you use there car instead of your bike. The other don't have a clue but they have an opinion !!!!!Just have a go and turn back if it is too awful !!!See that guy on the photo with his taxi...well, he bloody lied to me !! I could have cycled!!!!!

New scam at Poipet!

by aukjejetty

Tourists, especially those coming on the Khao San Road buses are being told they must change as much as $100 US into riel and are being given only 3400 riel to the dollar (the corrrect exchange rate is about 4000). This is a complete scam. There is no law that says you have to change any money on arrival in Cambodia (or in Sisophon) and certainly not at a rate that scams you for about $15. Whatever you might need to change you can do in Siem Reap at any number of locations at correct rates.(Don't vote for this tip, I took it from talesofasia.com, because I think it is important to know.)

they will suck all you're money

by tone78

there are a lot of beggers in this counrty, children learn from day one how to beg and learn english frases as one picture one dollar, parents are useing thei're children to get more moneyall the guesthouses will lie to u about how everything is nore expensive in the other plases ans they might say something like the restaurant over there closes at eigth thirty, but it offen doesn't...on the way to siem reap the drivers will use longer time so when you get to the city its so late that everything is closed so you have to stay in they're friends guesthouse....

Illegal Logging

by aukjejetty

In many countries in Asia there is illegal logging going on, especialy the poorest countries. The logs often go to the richer neighbouring countries who stopped the logging in their own country. I am not going to accuse any countries here but some of the 'victum'-countries are Cambodia, Myanmar and Indonesia, where forrests and jungles are being destroyed. This also affects the animals who live in these places. In Phnom Penh is an NGO called Save Cambodia's Wildlife, they try hard to educate the cambodians in what they can do to save the forrests and jungles. If you want to learn more about illegal logging please visit the website listed below.

Don't do what I'm doing in this picture!

by Rodan44

Any decent guide book on Cambodia will undoubtedly warn you not to drink any non-bottled water or anything with ice from an unknown source. With Cambodia being one of the poorest and least developed countries on earth, lying in a tropical area known for its many strange and deadly diseases, I would say that this is sound advice. Nonetheless, I am typically quite brave (read as 'stupid') and decided to drink some fresh sugarcane juice with ice of dubious origin in it, which I bought from a street vendor in Angkor Thom. And the result... well, I was fine, no ill effects whatsoever. I also ate some local food from a less than hygenic looking stall at the Siem Reap central market, and again escaped unscathed. But that doesn't excuse the rest of you! Follow my words and not my deeds, for some day my brazen arrogance will catch up with me. It's only a matter of time.

Climate

by keeweechic

There are 4 seasons in Cambodia. Sept-Oct are cool and wet. Nov-Feb are cool and dry. Mar-May are hot and dry and Jun-Aug are hot and wet. The most the temperature will be is around 35C and it will only probably get as low as 20C. Monsoon time is between June and October when it is usually clear in the mornings and raining for 1 to 3 hours in the afternoon. Make sure if you go in the hotter months that you carry water to rehydrate yourself.
