Don't do what I'm doing in this picture!

by Rodan44

Any decent guide book on Cambodia will undoubtedly warn you not to drink any non-bottled water or anything with ice from an unknown source. With Cambodia being one of the poorest and least developed countries on earth, lying in a tropical area known for its many strange and deadly diseases, I would say that this is sound advice. Nonetheless, I am typically quite brave (read as 'stupid') and decided to drink some fresh sugarcane juice with ice of dubious origin in it, which I bought from a street vendor in Angkor Thom. And the result... well, I was fine, no ill effects whatsoever. I also ate some local food from a less than hygenic looking stall at the Siem Reap central market, and again escaped unscathed. But that doesn't excuse the rest of you! Follow my words and not my deeds, for some day my brazen arrogance will catch up with me. It's only a matter of time.

Climate

by keeweechic

There are 4 seasons in Cambodia. Sept-Oct are cool and wet. Nov-Feb are cool and dry. Mar-May are hot and dry and Jun-Aug are hot and wet. The most the temperature will be is around 35C and it will only probably get as low as 20C. Monsoon time is between June and October when it is usually clear in the mornings and raining for 1 to 3 hours in the afternoon. Make sure if you go in the hotter months that you carry water to rehydrate yourself.

When you cross the border at Aranya Prathet

by herzog63

Crossing the border can be quite an experience for an unseasoned traveler! There are kids wanting to hold umbrellas for you and kids wanting money and candy. There are deformed beggars! Amputee beggars! And general scammers! Probably a few pickpockets are in the mix too! But it is pretty cool to see how busy the border is with all of the Huge carts of stuff that is being hauled across the border! So just keep your wits and enjoy the hustle and bustle of on the great trading borders of Cambodia and Thailand. Most people and publications will recommend to hang around this area after sundown. If you do hang around after sundown please let me know how it was.....hahaha

Watch out for pick-pockets

by xtephen

Most of the folks selling stuff are more laid back than what I encountered in Vietnam and they are friendlier people too. The one exception is the small kids. There was one kid in Siem Riep that was really agressive trying to get money from us. In addition to begging, on several occasions, I felt his hand reach into my back pocket. When he got near me, I would put my hand on my wallet, which was located in my front pocket. On one occasion, he tried hanging off my arm to while begging, in an attempt to get to my wallet.

Beware slippery steps!

by SirRichard

If you visit the temples during the rainy season, be careful when climbing up and down. The steps use to be narrow and very high, so when the floor is wet, you can easily slip and fall... and is a long way down if you are at the top!!

tourist guides

by rob12c

When visting the temples just be careful of the young guys who will follow you and start telling you information about the temples. They know what there talking about but somewhere along the way when nobody is around they will demand money for the information. Be careful because they wont stop until they get something.

Irregular staircases !!!

by muddybok

Please be extra careful when you're climbing staircases of temple mountain such as Ta Keo, Phnom Bakheng, Phimeanakas & Angkor Wat.The staircases are either irregularly built or too much wear & tear after all these years. Especially dangerous if your hands are not free to hold on railing or your hand is occupied with camera & drinking water.

Land Mines!

by squidchip

If you take off away from the main tourist route beware of landmines. There are a lot still in Cambodia. If traveling by dirt bike take care not to go off the main paths. Every year people are injured and killed by exploding land mines. In Siem Reap there is a local Mine Museum you can visit for lots of information.

Beggars in Phnom Penh

by bkoon

At the Sisowath Quay where most hotels are situated, there were many young beggars along the quay side. Sometimes they could make your irritable. It seemed to me that they were from some syndicate or something of that sort. Once, when walking along the river side, a group of them, pushed a wheelchaired kid and a stretcher with a kid, following me, blocking my way, etc. I pity them, not because they were poor and need to resort to begging, but the society had moved so fast that they could not live like the kids in the rural parts of Cambodia. What would they have become when they grow older? I wonder. I hope the Cambodia government and seriously look into helping this group of Cambodia kids.P/S: I was seated outside a restuarnt on the pathway in the evening and these young beggars were asking for food and gifts as I was eating. It became so annoying that I need to get the restaurant...

attack of the killer cambodian lettuce

by rootie

There's a sandwich stall at the far left end, facing the Bayon, that serves excellent and cheap sandwiches. We tried it once, loved it, and we had to try it again for the second time. However, feeling adventurous the second time around, we really ate the lettuce this time. It's not confirmed, but more than likely, we think it was the water used to wash the lettuce that "did us". I sure think I hosted some serious parasites. Ew. For several days, our bodies would take in nothing but "decarbonated" Coke.Yeah, I know, stupid mistake :-)
