As an alternative to the main trail up Jiuhuashan, one can also climb up the other side of the mountain. From the village of Huangshi, there is a stone/dirt path leading directly up to Tiantai.
Naturally, transportation is not exceedingly convenient. To get to Huangshi village from Qingyang city, first take a bus to Lingyang town. From there, hire a car/motorcycle to Huangshi village. Depending on the time of day, you may have to change cars at Donghe village.
