It almost goes without saying...

It almost goes without saying that the best way to get to Beijing is via airliner. I was able to get e fairly reasonable air fare from Osaka that went in via Shanghai.

I had been told and read many stories about going through customs and needing to supply a list of all western goods in ones possesion. (to make sure you didnt sell things on the black market, I guess) So you can imaging my surprise when I rocked up with a list of all my cameras and walkmans and no body cared. Nobody checked anything. Nobody even looked at my bags. The only conclusion I can draw from this is that it is hit or miss.
China is a very NON-English environment. Whereas Europe is a place you can work things out, China would be completely un decernable for most first time visitors. Cars even have the name brand emblem done in Chinese. So if this is your first trip to China you will likely want someone to met you to help get you away from the Airlport and 'into' town.

Undoubtly taxi...but always always choose a metered one...these ones tend to somewhat comprehend english... and alot of time..if you look long enogh, the meters never seem to move..haha...it is very cheap to get around by taxi, and you will NEVER have a problem finding one.

Traffic, on the other hand, is an absolute nightmare.

Becareful when you cross streets...pedestians don't have he right of way at all, nor do the drivers even acknowledge your presence. Build up your courage, and run with the pact, and don't look back. If you prefer to be courteous and wait patinetly. Be very patient. You may be in that exact same spot till night falls.

And unless you have an iron will, titanium bones, and nerves of the strongest steel..don't even think about renting a bike.

Many international airlines fly to Beijing. From Singapore, there are three direct flights from Changi Airport: Singapore Airlines, Air China and China Southern Airline. Tourism is big business in China and Beijing’s Capital Airport receives millions of visitors a year. Capital Airport services both international and domestic flights.

The Beijing Capital Airport is undoubtedly China's top air hub, with 98 international, 21 regional and 757 domestic air routes linking the capital with 54 cities ( excluding those in Taiwan Province) in 39 countries.More than 40 foreign airlines have set up booking offices in Beijing. See details in the Beijing Directory .
To and From Airport

If it is your first time to Beijing, the best bet is to have your hotel send a shuttle bus to come and get you. The other option is to take a taxi. But don't go with the guys who come up to you and say' Hello, taxi?' They are people with private cars and there is no guarantee as to how much they will charge or whether you will get to you intended destination. The way to go is out the front door to the taxi line. There is usually a bit of a long line, but it moves fairly quickly as there are more than enough taxis waiting there at all times of the day. These drivers are reliable and will charge according to the meter. Remember to have a Chinese version of the address you are going to. The other and probably cheapest option is for those who are fairly familiar with the city. There are two airport bus lines that leave every 30 minutes.

Location: Located 28km (18m) northeast of the city centre. Facilities include a bank, bureaux de change and ATM, a 24 hour medical centre, a post office, telephones, shops (including duty-free), cafés and restaurants.
: Metered taxis are available at the airport. The average journey time is 30-40 minutes. The Airport-City Shuttle Bus departs every 30 minutes from outside Arrivals and buses take three routes into the city – Xidan, Gongzhufen and Zhongguancun – and also stop at major hotels. The journey time is about 45 minutes.

Most well-known international airlines operate flights to Beijing Capitol Airport. The flight is about 10 hours, but it's great to see the Great Wall in the morning light when descending and approaching the airport.

Arriving at the Beijing...

Arriving at the Beijing airport don't even think of buying or eating something there, the prizes are really scandalous - at one place they wanted to have over 40 Yuen for a COFFEE!!! To get into town from the airport there are some good buses going for around 15 Yuen - taking the taxi will be quite expensive, cause it's a looong ride.
The traffic in Beijing is real HELL!!! It always took me hours to get from one place to another. I didn't try the subway, but it only has one circle line, covering just a small part of the centre of town - I think they should really expand their subway-network as a part of their 'New Beijing - Great Olympics' - project, otherwise the Olympics might turn out in total chaos! Otherwise, no matter whether you're driving in a crowded bus, a taxi or a limousine, IT JUST TAKES TOO LONG cause the streets are permanently jammed. You could also try going by bike if you have the guts for it, but I definitely wouldn't do it because of the terrible city smog ... Anyway, the buses are sometimes really ancient, not air-conditioned and too full, but sometimes really o.k. Imagine, there's almost a 1000 (!) different bus-lines in Beijing, so getting around by bus (with taxis it's the same thing) if you don't speak Chinese is really not easy, you should always have a map with you or a note in Chinese with the name of the destination you want to get to. The good thing about the busses is that they're really cheap! Taxis in Beijing are a lot cheaper than in Western countries, but compared to smaller cities in China quite expensive.

On the picture you can see one of these fabulous old gates they have everywhere in China, this one is near Tiananmen Square.

Exit Fee

For only 90 yuan this could be yours

When leaving Beijing by air you must remember that there is a 90 yuan fee. This must be paid at the airport before you enter the area to check into your flight. You must find the window where the fee is paid and get a passenger's coupon to show as you enter the check-in area. Remember to save a little money for this.

Almost everyone starts their Chinese trip in Beijing and almost everyone arrives by plane. Beijing's airport is the CAPITAL AIRPORT about 20 km NE of the centre. It can be reached easily on the newly built Airport Expressway.
The Beijing Subway is a good choice. It covers the downtown area and a ticket costs only 3 Yuan.
