Spitting: Art of spitting
We soon discovered that coughing up great wads of spit is a natural part of the everyday life in Beijing. I’m not sure if people cough and spit because of the air pollution or because they have a lot of dust being blown in from the deserts in the north. It seems like there is quite a lot of downfall in Beijing. I read somewhere that an average big city gets about 8 tons of downfall pr square kilometre but Beijing gets about 18 tons. Well, I can tell you that it is noticeable…some days when I blew my nose the tissue ended up kinda dirty…I shall not go into more details :-)

Well, if you are in Beijing and don't know what MahJong is probably you haven't ventured out of your hotel premises.
Every second street you go to youl wil find people playing it. OK, so what the hell is it...?
It is a classic board game of Chinese origin. So while I didn't find anyone playing Chinese Checkers which carries the Chinese pride in the name itself. This one is a puzzle game. It has plastic coins which some chinese characters and the goal is to remove all 144 tiles from the board. You may remove only paired free tiles. The tile is free when there are no tiles either to the left or to the right from it. Anyway, I didn't play it so don't know the critical details and expert comments to make. Here we have 2 people playing it though usually its a four guys/gals game.

  • Well, the song says there are 9 million bicycles in Beijing - maybe once but there's too much traffic now - it's too dangerous on a bike, everyone drives or takes public transport. Traffic is very congested at all times it seems.

Are you a little kid? Then go ANYWHERE!?
Westerners (like myself) will certainly witness some little ones using a "very public bathroom."

Eating and Drinking: Don't talk about death
While you are eating, especially in a family's home, do not speak about death. This is something they see as a sign of future bad luck for the family. Its pretty much rude in any culture though

    Toilets: Squatty Poddys
Work the thighs, work the thighs, and bring toilet tissue with you wherever you go. Wet wipes are handy too. Its not that often you will come across a sign like this picture (that looks eerily like a portrait of my mom ..she's going to kill me for saying that!) This cute little lady means you can sit and not squat.

    Eating and Drinking: Tea tasting
You can stop by any tea shop and have a taste of their offerings. The tea girls will prepare the tea infront of you and while you are at it tell you a short story. They are very attractive and it is difficult to leave the shop without buying some. The prices aren't that bad either.

Superstitions: Never buy clocks as gifts for Chinese friends
You should never buy clocks as gifts for Chinese friends (unless they do not mind). Many older folks still frown at that as the Chinese words for "sending clocks" sound almost the same as "sending you to your grave". So, if you are intending to buy a gift for a Chinese friend, clocks should never be a consideration!

On the other hand, watches are fine.
