Wangfujing Street: Night Markets
  • Tip Rating:
  • Aroung 6 pm some streets in Beijing turn into lively nightmarkets. Specially around Wangfujing Road you can spend your evening eating and drinking at many nice foodstalls. Just try all this local specialities!!! The only food I do not eat are small birds and fried insects.

    Latino: Let's Salsa!!

  • Well... this is one helluva place for Latin dancing. If you are into the salsa, this is the place for you. Generous dance floor are, reasonable priced drinks, good crowd, live band from Latin American... what are you waiting for? :)

Casual. There is a cloak room for your winter jacket.

Cashbox: Let's sing our hearts out...
  • Tip Rating:
  • You have not experience the nightlife of true Beijinger if you dont visit this place. Beijinger are true singers, they can sing day and night. When I say day and night it means non-stop. We once had a singing sessions among friends that stretches for the whole weekend, from Friday evening all the way to Sunday evening. Cashbox is the best/most popular place to sing in Beijing. The Chaoyangmeng Branch is the preferred choice. It has the best system around and they run 24 hours with buffet (free of charge) serving every 3 hours. Usually this place is packed and advance booking is advisable. You might be amused to see the crowd walk-in in the middle of the night at 1am dressing up and ready to sing!! That is a normal sighting.

    Latino: Spicy Hot Beijing!
  • Tip Rating:
  • LATINOS is a great place to go, even if you can't dance you can enjoy the scenery. Very upscale atmosphere, picture yourself in Havana, right in the middle of Beijing. The music was great from a full Latin band with horns, congos and bongos. The drinks were inexpensive and the scene was HOT!. Highly recommended!

Dress to impress, not like a slacker.

    The Big Easy: Creole Beijing!
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Big Easy features genuine Cajun cooking, good service and reasonable prices. Jazz and blues acts perform nightly. The place itself looks like it was plucked right out of New Orleans with a sit-down bar area, a second-floor dining area and a balcony with tables. The interior is great very dramatic early New Orleans style. I enjoyed sitting on the balcony and having a drink. The Big Easy is known for its killer cocktails, such as the specialty Mississippi Dream (Baileys, Kahlua, Malibu, banana and milk), although I just stuck with a jack and coke.

    Dress up a bit.

There Cafe is one of those places you fall into by accident. It's a small hutong, plastered with the gritty, evocative photographs of the owner. You can while hours away here, just looking through the photo catalogues... even the menu has his hutong and northern China pictures. A good start to the day with the ham, eggs and toast breakfast and a big mug of coffee. Friendly place in a little known street with a good number of great cafes, restaurants and bars.

Judging by the fantastic 'nude man in the Forbidden City' photographs, clothing may well be optional!

    Sanlitun Bar Street: Sanlitun
  • Tip Rating:
  • Nightlife in Beijing doesn't yet compare to London or Bangkok, but it's far far better than you'd imagine. Increasing numbers of top international DJs have begun to play clubs here and the music scene is pretty up to date. A few bands have made the trip too (Suede and Morcheeba have played here in 2003 - not the biggest of names but a sign of the growth in the music scene). Most of the nightlife is centred around the Sanlitun Embassy district. Sanlitun Lu itself has numerous bars with live music and imported beers and is a good place to start. The clientele is mixed but in most places predominantly Chinese rather than foreigners. Vogue (expensive and fashionable) probably remains Beijing's most renowned club, but to be honest it's pointless naming names. New clubs open and close so quickly that it's best just to ask around when you get there - or pick up one of the numerous free 'what's on' style magazines from a hotel or bar.

Houhai Lake Area: A carnival of lights reflect off a lake at night.
  • Tip Rating:
  • Houhai was a very elegant contrast to the seedy Sanlitun Bar district. There were many different bars and restaurants that lined the shores of the man made lake. I went to one place...can't remember the name exactly "dragon something" anyway it had a spot light in the shape of a dragon that illuminated on the sidewalk. The place was interestingly decorated and there was good music with a small dance floor. The area is a good spot for people watching and taking a stroll, although on my particular night there it was mysting that only added to the ambience.

    Styling and profiling.

    Paulaner: German Beer in Beijing
  • Tip Rating:
  • Without my dear friend Gaby I would never have experienced a Southern German pub in Beijing. I always love to see the local restaurants and bars. It was quite funny to eat suaerkraut and drink German beer in Beijing and see the waitresses in typical German dress - Dirndl - and they were this small Chinese girls!
