The dormitories in the Beijing Language University range from the abysmal to brand new comfort. It is another testament to the absurdity of government regulation that you could pay for almost the same rate but getting the bad end of the deal. Long term students, studying for at least a semester, will be paying Y50/night for a standard 2 bedroom with personal bathroom, TV and refrigerator. Rate will go up to Y58/night during the summer starting from 1st of May. The rooms in the new building 17 go for Y55/night and then Y65/night during the summer.

Beijing DaXue. The Beijing University has a wonderful garden with old trees and a small lake. At any time you will see students doing their Tai-Ji exercises. Near the university you find lots of cheap and good restaurants. In the very good bookstores nearby you can buy books in English.

Universities:
You'll probably get to see a Beijing University - the library is really famous and there's a fabulous Chinese art museum there (the Sachler - the other Sachler Museum is part of the Smithsonian institute in Washington, D.C.); you'll likely get a very enthusiastic student tour guide through as well.
Tsinghua is another of China's best schools. It was originally funded by the Americans at the turn of the century to train students in engineering, sciences and math. It's a beautiful campus and very western in feel.
This picture is from Tsinghua.
