Fruity Mix: Fruit Lover's Paradise in Beijing

    "Bite Me" shirts!
    by Confucius

This cosmopolitan cafe specializes in fresh fruit desserts, juices as well as international entrees enhanced by tropical fruit ingredients. Unlike the original "Fruity Mix" in Guangzhou, here in Beijing you can actually purchase the black shirts worn by restaurant staff that say "Bite Me"

I ordered the Italian spaghetti with papaya and meat sauce. They put grated fresh papaya under a thin layer of cheese on top of the spaghetti. Delicious! I also had the "Fruity Mix Fried Rice" which uses a light jasmine rice along with finely chopped cantaloupe and pineapple among other fruits and raisins. It tasted almost like a Kashmir style dish that I have had before at restaurants serving northern India cuisine. I washed it all down with a glass of fresh chilled mango juice.

Last morning in Beijing with a couple of hours spare Vicky meets me at 9.30 in the Hotel lobby. We jump into a taxi & once again I am safely in her hands. Very pleasantly surprised when we jump out of the car & I spy the sign in the attached photo. Please enlarge to see it clearly - the Bookworm @ le Petit Gourmand. This sounds interesting my brain says. Down we walk about 20m to the entrance & inpast the alfresco tables & chairs with the occasional umbrella. Inside, the bibliophile in me is in ecstasy for around every interior wall are bookshelves crammed to overflowing with books. Yes indeed good readers the marvellous V didn not disappoint on my last morning in Beijing. She knew just where to bring me to finish my Beijing trip perfectly.

Unfortunately I'd already had breafast only a bit over an hour earlier (part of my package so no cost) so I didn't eat anything. And I must honestly admit that I was just a tad disappointed that they didn't have my favourite mocha coffee on the menu. But a nice coffee was had all the same. This is a great little spot in Sanlitun. If I lived in Beijing I reckon I'd spend a fair bit of time here. The menu sounded really good & pretty reasonably priced too is seemed. Next time in Beijing it defintely has to be a full scale lunch here!!!!!

Tong Li Garden: A Safe Bet in the Right Company
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Had dinner here with Vicky (VT friend sugarpuff) & her boyfriend Charles on my first night in Bejing, in China itself actually. I couldn't have come here & had dinner by myself because the menu was in Chinese (characters only no pinyun) & I'd have no idea what to do or how to do it. Vicky speaks & reads Chinese. So she selected this restaurant & was in charge of ordering the food. Really enjoyed my meal here, especially even more so in retrospect as all the meals included as part of our package - the lunches & dinners were all very, very similar. A sort of santised, westernised version of Chinese food. So here was good because I knew it was a geunuine local restaurant in a whole street of genuine local restaurants. If you see Vicky's homepage you'll see she says how we had chicken's feet & snails then admits we didn't which I'm very glad of. As much as I like to eat something local I don't eat a lot of meat of any sort. Here also I was introduced into the skilful dexterity of using your chopsticks you eat with to get food from each dish bought out. Apparently the TongLi Garden Restaurant specialises in Hot Pot & Homemade Food. Now we didn't have Hotpot (although next time I'm in China I really do want to have a hotpot meal) so we must have had the Homemade food.

I'm not exactly sure if I've written these down properly after Vicky told me how to spell them. We had a number of dishes which included:- Gong Bao Ji Ding - chicken with peanuts, chilli & shallots, Xilanhua - Broccoli with garlic, Na Yi Shang Shu (or Shi?) - which translates as "Ants climbing Trees" I'm here to tell you that luckily it wan't literally that! lol! It was sort of like what I'd call singapore noodles (thin noodleswe get here at home) with small pieces of pork. Hence the ants climbing the trees. Loved that name & so glad it wasn't literal. Cao Yu - this was my favourite, a very yummy fish dish indeed. I have to finish with a BIG THANK YOU to Vicky (&Charles) for being such a generous & lovely hostess (&host). Hope they get downunder so I can look after them just as well.

This small street market sells every kind of chinese speciallity, from pekinese duck, dumplings, noodles (like yakisoba) to sticks of almost everything, including some exotics food choices. If you do not plan to eat bugs, scorpions or sea-stars, a good suggestion is noodles or dumplings.

Donghuamen Night Market: Exotic Snacks That Simply Entice Ur Mind!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Set in 1984, Donghuamen Night Market basically covers from the east of Donganmen Street to the north of Chenguang Street; which is also near to the Wangfujing Business Street. With more than 60 specialty snack hawker stalls, the market sells some edible and exotic snack foods found within China; noted especially from Xin Jiang and other provinces. Well for starters, the food that you see in the market can be rather scary, gross and smelly for those who are not used to the sights and smell of some of these snack foods which consist of skewed scorpions, sea horses, baby quails, little sparrows, grasshoppers, and little squids. One has to have a strong stomach to take these foods AND You have to take some risk, plenty of guts or be adventurous when trying out these foods! Of course, there are also edible ones: grilled lamb kebabs, herbal, jelly drinks, fried noodles. These food are rather cheap too. All less than US4 dollars!

Grilled lamb kebabs which is simply yummy cos' it's covered with plenty of cumin powder and red pepper herbs. So delicious; that's simply finger licking good. Yum yum! ; ) The herbal jelly drinks are rather cooling and good to ease the thirst during the summer.

Fantastic food (muslim, halal) from the province of Xinjiang from the far west. This restaurant only serve one short session per day from around 6pm to 10pm. If you come late, you will find yourself eating with the crowd dancing on your table!! Yes, table top dancing is what make it very special. Also, they have one of the best belly dancer performance on stage. Common sighting of celebraties like Jackie Chan, Bill Gates, etc..

Da Pan Ji - A local chicken dish serve with the la mian from the west. Very delicious and will make you crave for more. Alternative choices recommended are the Yang Rou Chuan and the Afanti Band (a sizzling beef that produce rythmic sounds like the band) Note: Remember to make table reservation prior to visit.

Hard Rock Cafe Beijing: Expensive but Exciting Environment
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Vibrant nightspot and great dining venue! However, the waiters and waitresses always seem to try hurrying you to order and finishing your food. Anyway, it provides great music with live band (but not on Sunday though) and it's definitely a place to dine with old friends and meet new friends! Party starts at 10.30 p.m. onwards. Who knows, you might get pick up by some bella and hunks! P/S: Due to its popularity in Beijing, as in the case the place might be booked for special function or events, do call up to avoid any dissapointment!

Basically the food consists the usual fare of burgers, main course and salads but don't expect it to be in large portion - most of it is rather small unlike in other HRC around the world. I like the Grilled Chicken but it was such a small portion that I didn't really get to enjoy it thoroughly - it was finished within minutes it arrived. Anyway, Nasi Lemak Malaya is no longer served in HRC as I discovered recently. Nevertheless, they do offer shooters with cheeky names like "B-52", "Orgasm", and "BlowJ*b". Mind you, the price to get this pleasure is mind-blowing. So, you better be sober when you call for this shot!
