Ming Yuan Restaurant: Beijing Cuisine Resto in Hotel

The Beijing Cuisine Restaurant in our Hotel Kang Ming and they serve Buffett Northern Chinese Breakfast hence eating authentic northern chinese breakfast items hehehe. very different from the cantonese breakfast in the southern chinese areas like cantonese cuisines which have less spicy stuff and more meat dumplings for breakfast. Remember that chinese food is divided into 16 basic styles! (like Beijing, Sichuan, hunan, Shandong, Shanghai, Cantonese, Fuijian, Hainese, Shenyang, etc.). Northern Chinese Breakfast is less into meats but more into carbohydrates and vegetables like millets, bread, deep fried breads, rice congee. the only protein is by hot soy milk or by hard boiled eggs and poached eggs.

Favorite Dish: the brown rice cakes which taste like puto binan in the philippines and the crispy fried millet which taste like shing a ling again in the philippines and the deep fried mantou bread (siopao w/ out filling in the philippines). the congee was too plain ( I still prefer cantonese style heavy congee with assorted fillings like century eggs, pork intestines, dumplings and pork liver).

Gesangmedo: Tibetan Culture and Dining
sugarpuff profile photo

Went here a year ago to see what Tibetan food was like but was actually very disappointed. Walked in and the decor was very pretty with lots of colourful hangings on the walls and ceilings, the staff were very attentive dressed in their traditional costume and there was live music too, but apart from that, it wasn't anything special. The menu was amazing, this long pull out of a thing with lots of dishes and corresponding photos, but none of them were actually as outstanding as we were led to believe they would be!

One of the only Tibetan restaurants in Beijing, so if you fancy it, please go and check it out, maybe I just didn't choose the best dishes!

A description of a dish:

"Moral is a famous edible wild fungus. It is picked from plateau forest 3000m in altitude. It is tender, crisp, sweet and tasty. It is good for the stomach and intestines, benefiting digestion, adjusts body energy flow and dispels phlegm. It can also prevent problems caused by wind and treats cold, making a good food especially in winter."

Favorite Dish: According to the restaurant the following are true: Some are very funny!

"From the snowy plateau at the top of the mountain"

"Caised on the pollution-free peaks of Maya snow mountains"

"Precious ancient breed of semi-domesticated yak. Nationally recognised rare species"

"National standard grade A green (organic) food"

"Very rare, only one of these "white peaclon the prairie" white yak per 150,000 people"

"It is very rare and very delicious. It is best prenicum venison"

"Lamb meat of Qing Yuan is the best main course of China, the meat quality is greeness, don't ascend the fire, having no flavour of the smell of mutton!"

"White Yak were slaughtered by imam and were delievered everyday by air. The best yak ,eat should be freshly!"

A-Che Bar & Restaurant: Ropa Vieja, Cuba tastes.
TJSheen profile photo
TJSheen 1 reviews

A-Che has the best Ropa Vieja (Old clothes) I've ever had. Freshly made by the chef Aleixis, a Cuban professional chef who lives and works in beijing for the past two years. The menu mixed with Spanish tapas, Latin dishes and Australian steaks. Food tasty and portion comfortable. Some vegetarian choises available, things like Roasted bell peppers with Spanish dressing. Good choices of wine from New world.

The ambience is very gentle at second dining floor while the first floor has a huge bar serves Mojitos. Great Mojito! only 35 Yuan.

On weekend nights this is a party place where you could feel the island fever. A Cuban band plays salsa and traditional Cuban rythems making this place a Latin fiesta.

Favorite Dish: Ropa Vieja (Old clothes)---very famous Cuban specialty. It is ripping flank steak cooked in a spicy-sweet, tomato, garlic, cumin and onion sauce. Savory.

Mixed tapas plate, a sort of Cuban version of Tex-Mex snacks---Nachps with bean dipping, paprikaed potato wedges with brava sauce, fried squid rings with Spanish ali-oli sauce, avocado grilled scallops, tomato and fresh pesto on French bread. Super valued 11 Euros.

Bao Du Feng: Who likes tripe?

Tripe - part 1
2 more images

If you go to Beijing and don't eat this stuff, let me tell you, you had better stay at home.

Bao4 du4 (Quick-Fried Tripe) is an Islamic snack made of tripe of sheep or cattle. The tripe is first cut into stripes and then boiled in water (it is not fried as the English name suggests). After this delicacy is cooked you may then dip it into the sauce they serve in a separated bowl.
In fact, the secret of bao du resides in its exquisite sesame sauce. Just delicious!

As to me the best bao du in Beijing is served at Bao Du Feng, another hundred-year old family business. Before it was located in an old hutong in Qian Men, now it has moved to Hou Hai in Xi Cheng district and is right inside Jiu3 Men2 xiao3 chi1.

Times are changing, especially in Beijing and Jiu Men Xiao Chi is now housing many of the hundred-year old family businesses that were running throughout the city. Survivors of modern times...

Favorite Dish: Tripe related dishes you can enjoy while snacking at Bao Du Feng:

du4 ren2
du4 jing4
du4 ling3
du4 xin1
shi2 xin4
du4 ban3
bai3 ye4
du4 hu2 lu2
da4 suan4 tou (a big head of garlic)

I am sorry I can not provide you their equivalent English names.

Chamate: Finally, non-salty & non-oily food found here
manta30 profile photo
manta30 6 reviews

It is a Taiwan-based restaurant which offers various set meals including side dishes, a main course, dim sum, rice, cold edamame and diced veggies, hot minced pork, pot of tea and little cup, 2 slices of season fruits- ranging from RMB46 to RMB86. Finally found a place which serves not too salty and not too oily food at a resonable price. Famous for hot pot and flower teas. Menus come in English.

Favorite Dish: stewed beef slice in hot pot set.

Quanjude Hepingmen Roast Duck Restaurant: The Beijing Duck!
pearsedoran profile photo

This must be the best and oldest "Peking" Duck Restaurant in Beijing 1864, it was here that "Peking "Duck was first cooked and served, it is a very large Restaurant however you must make a reservation as it is the most popular" Peking "Duck Restaurant in Beijing.
Of course it is now called "Beijing "Duck but i don't think the Ducks worry about the name change!!!!!

Favorite Dish: Beijing Duck, really lovely, the service was wonderful ,even showing us how to prepare it and how to use the other dishes to enhance the taste of the Duck, see my photo.
A wonderful Restaurant,I just wish I had ordered more Roast Duck [they are very small]

Jiu3 Men2 xiao3 chi1: Beijing snacks

Favorite Dish: If you have that strong desire to taste Beijing snacks, don't waste your time searching here and there, I will give you a short-cut.

For good Beijing snacks you should go to this place called Jiu3 Men2 xiao3 chi1'. This place is kind of a food street where you can find some of the best Beijing traditional snacks. Why? Because the government wants to give a better look to Qianmen and has recently demolished many of the front buildings and furbishing the place, as a result many of those hundred years old restaurants (lao3 zi4 hao4) have moved here.

The Courtyard: Steak to die for!

Looking out over the Forbidden City?s moat, The Courtyard Restaurant is a very swanky! Part of the Courtyard Gallery, which promotes contempory Chinese art, it serves asian-influenced food however we both ate the Australian fillet mignon as we had overdosed on Chinese food and just felt like a dirty big steak!

Bleu Marine French Restaurant was a terrific surprise. There is a unique menu every day based on whatever ingredients the chefs pick up or the fish that is available. We ate the french onion soup and pumpkin soup and then tucked into some wonderful fish.

Sculpting in Time Cafe: Sculpting in Time

I have debated for a seriously long time about whether to write a tip about S.I.T, but as it seems to be well and truly on the tourist map now, there seems no point not to!

This is simply one of my favourite places. I can't quite put my finger on why, because the service is often slow and a bit sloppy, but it just has the right atmosphere....good mix of Chinese and foreigners, relaxing, slightly bizarre furnishings, but it feels "light" (as compared to the gloominess of SPR next door).

This is where I go (from the office or home) if I need peace and quiet and good background music, with a decent coffee. They do a fairly wide range of food (deli style + pasta) and good coffee.

Favorite Dish: Note that if you order a large coffee it comes in a rather unwieldy soup bowl. The small size is a good-sized mug.
The banana smoothie is recommended by my daughter, who knows a good smoothie apparently. I intend following up on exactly how she knows this.
