Supposedly, Beijing's oldest Thai restaurant, Red Basil suffers from being just beyond the reaches of Sanlitun, and just beyond the edges of Xiao Yun Lu, and just beyond the reaches of You Yansha. It's just not in a convenient location and has no parking. It is always quiet, and not exactly cosy, with a cavernous room, awkwardly lit.
The food at Red Basil is good, and more spicy than usual in Beijing's Thai eateries: it is also not as expensive as several of the Beijing magazines suggest. It's s good spot for lunch, although the service can be a bit on the slow side - curious as it is empty.
One question though: are te dangly things hanging out of the centre of the hige mirrors of religious significance or just decoration? Nobody seems to know why they are there.
Favorite Dish: I am no expert on Thai food...but I like it all. Someone else always ends up choosing the food at Thai restaurants and I have never been unhappy.
This is not a great restaurant but if you want to et away from the crowds and are nearby, it's good Thai food and some rather unusual Thai tea to go with it.

Very upscale Thai restaurant. Lovely decor. Very clean lines. Large and spacious with a vaulted ceiling. Great food! Probably the most expensive Thai restaurant in Beijing.
Dawn and I had a lovely evening there. Make sure you reserve ahead of time. This is a great place to take someone on a first date!
Favorite Dish: Seafood Curry; Green Curry
