by socrates_07 There are three lakes west of the Imperial Palace: Beihai, the North Lake, Zhonghai, the Central Lake, and Nanhai, the South Lake. The history of Beihai Park goes back more than 800 years. In the 10th century, an imperial residence was built here. When Beijing became the capital of the Yuan Dynasty, the first Yuan emperor, Kublai Khan, had the park splendidly designed. The large picturesque stones on the park grounds were brought here from the Imperial Garden of the Northern Song Capital, Kaifeng. In 1651, the White Pagoda was built on the site of the ruins of Guanghan Palace which had been destroyed by an earthquake. Main attractions in Beihai Park are Round City, Jade Flower Island, White Pagoda,Wanfo Lou Tower, Nine-Dragon Wall , Iron Screen, Xiao Xitian Pavilion, and Chengguang Dian, etc. Leave a Comment

Reading the paper in Beihai Park by JohanIsWeg Visiting Beihai Park on a Saturday, I was amazed to see the local population eagerly reading the newspaper in a very public way. Broadsheets had been neatly encased in frames attached to a wall, complete with a decorative awning, to allow residents to catch up with breaking news. Head down to Beihai Park if you want to share in information-sharing slightly more physically substantial than cyber space! Open 0600 to 2000. Address: Beihai ParkPhone: 64031102

by socrates_07 I was very impressed by the chinese gardens and rockeries which are between the 'Nine Dragon Screen' and the North Gate. They were popular with Emperor Qianlong and it's easy to see why - even when the place is crowed (and it will be crowed at the weekend or main holidays for sure) the atmosphere is tranquil. Nine Dragon Screnn by socrates_07 On the north side of the lake there is the impressive 'Nine Dragon Screen" (or in Chinese: 'Jiu Long Bi'). Its 27 meter long, one of the largest in China and in good conditon. There are dragons on both sides, so at least one side is always in the sunny side. (during day time, of course) Leave a Comment

Round City by socrates_07 Round City (Tuan Cheng), originally an islet in Taiye Lake, was part of Da Ning Gong in the Jin Dynasty. It was called Yuan Di or Ying Zhou in the Yuan Dynasty. In 1264, the Yi Tian Dian was built on it, and the name was changed into Cheng Guang Dian in 1417. The Round City's total area is about 4500 square meters with a circular wall of 4.6 miter high and 276 meter long. In 1669, the Cheng Guang Dian was collapsed in an earthquake. It was rebuilt in 1690 and expanded in 1746 to the present scale. The Round City has a distinctive courtyard with halls, pavilions and ancient trees. There is a white jade Buddha statue set out in Cheng Guang Dian. Witin the Round City, there is a Jade Jar Pavilion in which there is a jade jar - called 'Du Shan Da Yu Hai' - left from the Yuan Dynasty. In 1961, the Round City and the Beihai Park were listed by the Stated Council as key places of relics preservation in China. Leave a Comment

Beihai Park - Beijing, China by linwei66 This is a great place to have a picnic, take a walk, or just relax. It really is beautiful and is a nice quiet break from the noisy city. Entry isn't very expensive either- just 10 yuan in Automn 2003. Leave a Comment Directions: Just northwest of the Forbidden City. Within a short walking distance from the north gate of the City.

by keeweechic Beihai Park was transformed into a royal garden around a 1,000 years ago. This imperial park is set around artificial lakes and the finest example of a classical Chinese garden. It was once reserved exclusively for the imperial family. There are pavilions, temples, halls, and covered walkways, and you can rent a rowboat for the lake. There is a restaurant within the park which is said to have been Dowager Empress Cixi’s favourite. Her appetite could extend to 120 courses!.
