The Badaling section of the Great Wall of China is likely the most popular and the most touristy. It's about an hours drive outside Beijing. You can hike up snaking sections of walls, enter the watchtowers and see distant views. However you will be sharing this with crowds of other people and plenty of souvenir vendors, but all in all the wall at Badaling is spectacular.

Badaling Great Wall, it was enlisted in the World Cultural Heritage Directory by UNESCO. This section with an average altitude of over 1,000 meters is the outpost of the Juyongguan Pass. The mountain slope is very steep and the roads are tortuous. These features made it a military stronghold. Badaling Great Wall is like a strong dragon winding its way along the mountain ranges.
As a landmark erected at the top of a group of mountain ranges, Badaling Great Wall has also witnessed many significant historic events.

If I were to go back to Beijing I would do the Great Wall completely differently. We took a tour, which consisted of a tour guide and 6-8 passengers. They took us to 2 other places first, one of which was a restaurant/gift shop where the food was not very good and the shop was overpriced. These 2 stops meant less time at the Great Wall! By the time we got to the Great Wall we had about 45 minutes to walk on it. We never really got beyond the crowds.
If I go back I will skip the tour and just find public transportation and spend hours there.

It’s a big wall….I heard later that there are other locations to visit the wall that aren’t quite as crowded. Find those if you can. Lord have mercy, why did we go in August???…that’s all I’ve got to say..I think the picture illustrates my mood.
What I enjoyed the most were all these school children who bombarded us when we arrived at the entrance. They were so cute, practicing their English, asking all these questions. So ya, go see the wall….its a big ass famous bridge. I had more fun people watching. No regrets though…..glad I went.
