The Marble Boat is also called Qingyanfang Boat, is located in the northwest of Kunming Lake. It was first built in 1750 with a Chinese-style wooden superstructure on it. Unfortunately in 1860, the original boat was burned down by the Anglo-French forces, and in 1893, it was rebuilt with a French-style superstructure and two wheelers added to it. Taking the implied meaning of "the water can hold the boat as well as topple the boat", the Marble Boat symbolizes the steadfast rule of the Qing dynasty.
Built with huge stones, the body of this boat is 36 meters long with two tiers. Although made of wood, the superstructure is painted white, looking like a marble boat. Hence the name Marble Boat.
See the iced water? My camera also fell to the floor breaking down, there.

The Marble Boat was originally built in 1755 in Chinese style, imitating the sailing boats which Emperor Qianlong (1711-1799) took during his inspection to Southern China. In 1860, it was burned down (as it's actually made out of wood and painted to look like marble), and then rebuilt in Western style in 1893 through Empress Dowager Cixi's embezzling naval funds. Inlaid with colourful glass windows and wheels and paved with coloured bricks, the boat is 36 meters (118.1 feet) long, two stories high. Using the huge mirrors fixed on each deck, on rainy days Cixi could enjoy the dainty lake scene while having tea.

The Marble Boat was built in the 19th century and has an infamous story. It's construction was financed with funds originally raised for the creation of a modern chinese navy. Instead of war ships, the emperor built a single boat of marble.

It's real name is the Clear and Peaceful boat.
This marble boat lies docked at the west side of Longevity Hill.
Apperently much of the summer palace was damaged during the second opium war, and Empress Cixi began repairing the palace with money earmarked for a modern navy.
She also had this boat made and that was the closest thing to a naval unit that the earmarked money ever came.
If more leaders thought like that we might just find a way to stop wars for good :-)

Marble pagodas and other boats can be seen at the lakeside of Summer Palace. It provides a great photo shoot. We did not dare step inside the pagoda. Very unique.
