Forbidden City: Update on the Palace Museum/Forbidden City
Well, we had to visit this site once again. This time we really took our time and also had a look at some of the side halls which are also well worth seeing. I have included the scale model of the site which is in one of the side halls next to the Hall of Preserving Harmony

There is now an audio guide (see photos) provided. Can't comment on whether they are worthwhile. We would probably have hired one if it had been our first visit.

Great Wall (Mutianyu): GREAT WALL VISIT
IT IS A 1 HOUR AND 30 MIN DRIVE AWAY FROM BEIJING.
WE PARKED AND WALKED UP TOWARD THE SKI LIFT CHAIR UP TO THE GREAT WALL.
Who would of think taking a ski lift chair up the Great Wall??
While walking up the wall steep steps looking at each step, arch way, tower section.
There are also vendors selling water and chinese crackers, chips etc by each arch way or tower section. We also took the Ski Gondola=Cable ride down. There was also a Tobaggon slide ride down, I did not see anyone go down?

I did not see to many people while walking on the Great Wall but maybe we missed them while on the ski lift and Gondola? but When we got down near the parking lot vendor area i saw more people.

    Forbidden City: Meridian Door
The entrance to the Forbidden City is one of the two best known images of China - the big red wall with Mao's picture (the other is the wall, of course!). That image makes part of Tiananmen square, and it is not followed inside.
It's a strange sensation crossing that door - we feel like crossing history, like really entering a forbidden world.

$25 Foot Massage at a Traditional Medicine Academy
  • Tip Rating:
  • Because I was in the medical profession, my guide decided to bring me to the Academy for Traditional Medicine. The place looked like a hospital and people were wearing white overcoats like in a lab.

I was broguht into a room and later, I was introduced to a prominent Traditional Medicine man who felt my pulse here and there and then said I needed some tablets for my kidneys! Then I was given a list of medications that I could buy for myself.

I was trained in Western Medicine and was a bit skeptical, but I do not discount everything traditional. I do think acupuncture does help in some situations. So, I looked at what else they offered and I saw foot massages for US$25 --- I said "I'll just have this foot massage..."

Then, I was left alone in the room, asked to remove my shoes and then this six-foot Chinese lady came in and without a word, grabbed my feet and started pounding at my soles. And it did feel good, but the spooky thing was she was looking straight at my eyes the whole time and not smiling! That was one time I wish how I knew how to speack Chinese....

    Forbidden City: Immense Harmony
Harmony is the general world to qualify buildings and yards inside the Forbidden City. Supreme, Central, Preserving, whatsoever,as a matter of fact, they all seem alike to me, in what I prefer to describe as "Immense harmony" (with the Emperor's excuses)

Great Wall (Mutianyu): Mutianyu wall - energy savers
When visiting the Great Wall at Mutianyu, take one way ticket for the cable car. Once you are up, you can look around a little bit on the left, but mainly walk the wall nto the right and come down back to the parking by taking the ropeway. This way you are mainly walking down most of the way on the wall with very few sections where you need to climb. Perfect way to see the wall for those with below average physical fitness.

Great Wall (Badaling): The Great Wall Experience
Obviously, this is something not to be missed when visiting China. The part of the wall most visited by tourists to Beijing is Badaling, where most of the restoration of the wall has taken place. Be prepared to climb a lot of steep stairs, which can be quite strenuous if you're not in good shape. And be prepared to see a lot of people and souvenir vendors on the wall, as well as a bunch of souvenir shops along the road leading to the entrance to the wall.  Obviously, with the wall itself being about 4,000 miles long, it can't all be seen in a few hours or even in a day.  But enough of it can be seen to give you the sense of how amazing an achievement it was for the ancient Chinese, and the people of China are justifiably very proud of it. And for anyone, Chinese or otherwise, climbing the Great Wall is an experience like no other, and a thrill not to be forgotten.

    Summer Palace: Modest buildings
  • Tip Rating:
  • Contrasting with the beautiful richness of the outdoors, the buildings of summer palace seem modest, but fit well in the whole, discreetly integrated in the complex. Contrasting also with the Forbidden City, many of them are not empty, showing (to those happy guys that can look inside over dozens of heads) some precious details of the used furniture and goods.
