The Beijing Confucian Temple is the second largest Confucian Temple in China after the one in Confucius' hometown of Qufu (see more on my Qufu page). It was built in 1302, and imperial officials used it to pay their respects to Confucius until 1911. The compound was enlarged twice, during the Ming and Qing dynasties and now occupies some 20,000 square meters. The complex includes four courtyards aligned along a central axis. From south to north, noteworthy structures includes the Xianshi Gate, Dacheng Gate, Dacheng Hall and Chongshengci. Inside the temple there are 198 stone tablets positioned on either side of the front courtyard, and they contain more than 51,624 names of Jinshi (the advanced scholars) of the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties, and 14 stone stele pavilions of the Ming and Qing dynasties that hold the precious historical information of ancient China. Next door to the temple is the Imperial College which is also included in the entry price and well worth a look. Open: 8.30am-5pm. Admission: RMB20. Leave a Comment

The Yonghegong Tibetan Buddhist Lama Temple, the biggest lamasery in Beijing, was built in 1694 as the residence of Prince Yong. After the prince came to the throne to become Emperor Yongzheng, he promoted his old residence into a temporary dwelling palace called "Yonghegong" (meaning palace of harmony and peace) in 1725. In 1744, his successor, Emperor Qianlong changed the palace into a lama temple. The temple complex features a series of halls along a central axis plus three Memorial Archways. The Hall of Harmony and Peace is the main building of the temple. It houses three bronze statues of the Buddha’s of the Three Ages. The Pavilion of Ten Thousand Happiness’s contains an 18 m tall statue of the Maitreya Buddha carved from a single piece of White Sandalwood. The statue is one of three artworks in the Temple which were included in the Guinness Book of Records in 1990. Open: 9am-4.30pm. Admission: RMB25. This Observatory was built in 1442 and is one of the oldest in the world. It is located in part of the old Ming Dynasty city wall that once encircled Beijing, on a raised platform. It served the Ming and Qing astronomers in their star-gazing reports for the Emperor. As he was considered the Son of Heaven, the movements of the heavenly bodies were an important affair. The instruments on display include an Armillary, Celestial Globe, Ecliptic Armilla, Azimuth Theodolite and Sextant. Admission: RMB10. Leave a Comment Directions: Jianguomen Metro Station

The White Dagoba of Miaoying Temple stands north of the centre of the temple. It was designed by the Nepalese architect Anigo, whose work also includes the Buddhist Temples in Mt. Wutai. The bottom of the dagoba is a three-layered seat, the body appears to resemble an upside-down ice cream cone which makes it an interesting construction. It was built in 1279 and survived a fire in 1368. However, it was badly damaged after the Tangshan earthquake of 1976 which left it tilting to one side. Open: 9am-4.30pm. Admission: RMB20 Leave a Comment Address: Fuchengmennei Street in Xicheng DistrictDirections: Bus 13

This temple is famous for its tall and striking white dagoba stupa. The temple has experienced a long period of uncertainty during Chinese history. In the year 1271, Mongolian leader Kublai Khan united the whole country and started the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368). The governor of the spacious and mysterious Tibet also began to succumb to the central state at this time. To consolidate the relationship between the empire and the monkish power in Tibet and to gain the agreement of the Tibetan Buddhists among the Yuan officials, Kublai Khan granted imperial permission to build the White Dagoba. When it was completed in the year 1279, a further decree was given to grant the building of yet another temple around the dagoba within an area of 160,000 square metres. Unfortunately, the temple was burnt to the ground in 1368, and amazingly only the White Dagoba remained. In 1457 of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), Emperor Tianshun commanded the rebuild of the temple which covered an area of 13,000 square metres (3.2 acres), much smaller than the original dimensions. Open: 9am-4.30pm. Admission: RMB20 Leave a Comment Address: Fuchengmennei Street in Xicheng DistrictDirections: Bus 13
