The Bedroom Hall served as residence for the emperors during the period of abstinence before rituals. The inscription on the board in the front of the hall is two Chinese characters, literally meaning Respectful and Quiet. A throne-bed and flowers stands were placed in the hall for the emperors to handle daily routines, hold rituals and grant interviews to the chancellors. The north bay served as a bedroom during the period of abstinence in winter, equipped with heating installations such as heated bed curtains, a heatable earthen-brick bed and a charcoal brazier or basin while the south bay was used or living during the period of abstinence for summer. The two minor bays served as a sitting room and study. Emperor Qianlong composed dozens of poems here to express his feelings on worship to Heaven.

Palace of Abstinence - Beamless Hall

Built in 1420, the Beamless Hall is the main hall within the Palace of Abstinence and got its name because it is not supported by any wood beams but by brick arches. Different rituals were conducted here when emperors entered or left the Palace of Abstinence. The inscription on the board in the front of the hall reads "Admire Holy Heaven" in Emperor Qianlong's original handwriting.

The Palace of Abstinence, built in 1420, was the palace where the emperor used to observe abstinence from meat, drink, music, women and care for the state affairs three days before he conducted sacrificial rites at the Temple of Heaven. The palace complex is located just inside the park wall near the west entrance and is covered with green tiles symbolising the emperor's obedience to heaven. The palace complex covers an area of 40,000 square metres and includes ritual, service and defensive buildings such as the Beamless Hall, bed chambers, a belfry, a stone pavilion housing a bronze statue (symbol of justice and righteousness) and rooms for guards and servants.

Admission: RMB10.
