In my opinion, this is the best and cheapest way to travel from and to the airport in Beijing.
I made the connection XIDAN - AIRPORT, line 2, and it is convenient because Xidan is served by underground.
First Bus departures from the airoport at 07:00, and from Xidan (building aviation) at 05:40.
Fare is 16 CNY, and the journey time is about 55 min.

The cheap way to get into the city from the airport (till the subway extension is available in 2008) is to take one of the airport shuttle buses. There are 5 services, going to different parts of the city.
All you need to do is to hop out at the terminal stop and then connect via subway or public buses to the place you wish to go.
The 1-way fare is 16RMB (circa Jun 2007). Look out for exits 11 and 13 at the Arrival Hall and pay the fare at the ticket desk. Upon that, proceed to the right bus and take your seat. (Free seating). The bus will leave once the bus is filled up.
Journey into the city is about 30 minutes, baring no traffic jams or accidents along the Highway.

There are bus service in airport to the city. When you walk out from international arrival, you can see there are several buses there. The ticket price is 16RMB comparing with taxi, about 100RMB.
Of course, when you are leaving, you may also take the bus from city to airport.

There are about 5 different shuttle buses from the airport. You should see them as you exit the international terminal. There is a small ticket desk nearby but the English spoken was very limited. Bus number two takes you to the airplane ticket sales center a few blocks from the main gate to the forbidden city and Tiananmen Square. I did not see the number two on the bus as they said I would but it was labeled Xidan. I like the fact that I was going to the last stop and it happened to be near where I wanted to be.

The most convenient way to reach city center from airport or vice versa is by taxi if you are a couple or 3 people. Taxi will cost about 100 Yuan including highway toll. The taxi stand is easy to find on airport terminal exit. If you have too many luggages, you may need to take some inside the car since some taxis may have narrow trunks.

The airport buses are cheap (Y16), clean and very comfortable. You will need to push your way on in order to get ahead of all of the Chinese trying to push ahead of you, but once you're on it's very easy. They didn't announce the stops in English so count how many stops there are and get off at the appropriate place.
Here are the routes:

NO.2
Capital Airport - Xidan
NO.3

Beijing Airport recently underwent a major expansion. The new terminal, Terminal 3, is HUGE, ultramodern, and truly world-class. We were extremely impressed with it. The were lots of check-in desks, and we also also found plenty of shops and restaurants to visit while we were waiting for our flights. We had no problems getting around, as there is plenty of signage in English for us non-Mandarin speakers.
If you are connecting through Beijing and need to change terminals, leave yourself plenty of time. That is because Terminal 3 is on the other side of the airport from the older terminals, and you have to take a 20-minute shuttle bus ride to travel between them. Also, be aware that because Terminal 3 is so large, it takes a while to walk to and from your gates.

The Chinese built Terminal 3 at Beijing Capital Airport as part of the preparations for the Olympic Games. It is impressive, with plenty of light and space and attractive decoration featuring traditional Chinese motifs. And it's big. It can take 30 or 40 minutes to get to the baggage carousels to claim your luggage: not because of any queues or delays at immigration but simply because the new terminal is so vast. Perhaps they should change the airport code from PEK to BIG!

Once you arrive in Beijing Capital Airport (PEK).... cleared customs, etc.... go outside, walk to your right and look for counter with lady selling tickets for 16 yuan (about US$2.00) and take bus to Aviation Building, near Xidan subway stop.... on Xi Chang'An Jie (you'll pass Tiananmen Gate on your way there)...
Look for the subway entrance (when you look at Aviation Building -- subway entrance will be towards your left), pay 3 yuan and get going!
This is the most affordable way.. if you have time and don't want to pay US$20.00 and above....
* The same goes if you want to return to the Airport....

The Beijing Capital International Airport is situated 25km (16 miles) northeast of the center of Beijing at the Airport Road, Chaoyang District. From the center it takes about 40 minutes to get there (under normal traffic conditions).
Good news: a new metro link from the airport to the city center is expected to open early in 2008. In the meanwhile you may use the following modes of transport:
1) Outside the Arrivals area on the lower level there are lots of taxis run by several taxi companies and there are no real differences among them, don’t think the prices are different from one to another, just get one cab with a meter and go. (Check, NOW, my ‘Getting a taxi at the airport’ tip).
2) There is one government-run Airport-City Shuttle Bus departing from outside Arrivals running 6 routes into Beijing (this bus also stops at some major hotels):
a) Xidan (you should be interested in this one because it goes to central Beijing and it is very close to the Forbidden City)
b) Gongzhufen
c) Fangzhuang
d) Beijing Railway Station
e) Zhongguancun
f) Wangjing
For more detailed information concerning schedules, stops, prices, etc., visit this website http://www.beijingtrip.com/transport/airport-bus.htm.
For your record many Beijing hotels run their own airport shuttle bus services, therefore, if the transportation problem worries you, before going make sure with the hotel staff that there will be a shuttle bus there.
Another point is, many of these hotel-run shuttle buses only operate during business hours, and if it happens your flight lands there in the late evening probably there won’t be any shuttle bus. Well, I just think you should be aware of this detail.
