    Subway: Good Beijing Subway
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Beijing Subway is relatively easy to use to get around the city and the stations around the Forbidden City area is quite clean, though I can't say about the rest of the stations. The carriages are quite good and the speed is good, allows you to travel fast around the city area.

    Subway: Subway
  • Tip Rating:
  • The subway was clean and the fare was cheap (2RMB unless you are taking the "train" branch that extends north that makes the total cost 5 RMB). The stations are announced in Chinese and English but I could not really understand either. As long as missing the right stop does not bother you too much --and you can always just hop on the subway going the other way-- this is a good way to get around town to many of the sites of touristic interest. The subway system is currently being expanded with new lines for even more convenience. A line out to the airport is promised. Although you should always use caution with your valuables, the subways seemed much safer than in many countries. I would never worry about coming up in the wrong neighborhood in Beijing as I might in Paris or NY.

Subway: The ever so easy subway!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Subway, Metro, Tube...however you like to call it....it's got to be the easiest transportation mode in Beijing. Of course there are buses which take you everywhere in the city, but at present all bus stop signs are solely written in Chinese which means your average tourist cannot read it! I wonder if that will change for the Olympics?! I regress.... And the subway station signs are in chinese characters, and chinese pinyin, making one's life far more bearable! At present there are just three lines in operation, but by 2008, there plan to be around another 5 or 6 lines, totally 8 or 9 i think! So jump on the 'tube' for just 3yuan and go anywhere you fancy!

Subway: The trains are less crowded...
  • Tip Rating:
  • The trains are less crowded and the fare is a flat five jiao (S$0.10) regardless of the distance travelled. Trains run at a high frequency during rush hours. There is nothing to see in the depths but it beats having to fight the crowds in the bus. The subway is open from 5am to 10.30pm. There are information boards displaying maps of the network, however, these are only written in Chinese.

Subway: SUBWAY Beijing was the first...
  • Tip Rating:
  • SUBWAY Beijing was the first city in China to have a subway. Although often crowded, the subway is often the fastest way to get around the center city area. There are only two subway lines, however. There is the circle line that runs underneath the Second Ring Road, and the straight line which extends from XI Dan out to Pingguo Yuan. So if you are going to places within the Second Ring Road, or out to the southwestern parts of the city, you can avoid the awful traffic jams that are ubiquitous in Beijing. Subway tickets are 2 yuan, and to make a full circle on the circle line takes about 40 minutes, and from Xi Dan to Pingguo Yuan takes about 30 minutes
