    Subway: Beijing Subway
Beijing Subway Daytime telephone (Monday-Friday): 010-6834 0565 Nighttime telephone (Monday-Friday and the whole day of Saturday and Sunday): 010-6834 0563 E-mail: dtservice@bjsubway.com Taking the subway is the fastest mode of transportation in Beijing. It usually operates from 5A.M to 11P.M. Beijing Subway in Chinese is “bei3 jing1 di4 tie3” (I can not show you the characters because your English Windows doesn’t support Chinese characters). Outside, when you see a square grey pillar on top of which is a lighted blue sign with the letter ‘B’, it means that there is an access to the subway station. No matter how long you travel and how many times you transfer to other subway lines, it costs you only CNY 2 to take a metro in Beijing. What a good deal! Beijing subway has 5 lines in operation: Line 1 (straight line): From Pingguoyuan station to Sihuidong station (visit the follow website for the timetable) Hot line Service: 010-6887 3399-5568 (Daytime) - 010-6887 3399-5543 (Night) Line 2 (loop line): From Xizhimen station to Jishuitan station (visit the follow website for the timetable) Hot line Service: 010-6229 2547 (Daytime) - 010-6229 2541 (Night) Line 13 (above ground railroad): From Xizhimen station to Dongzhimen station (visit the follow website for the timetable) Hot line Service: 010-6229 2547 (Daytime) - 010-6229 2541 (Night) Batong Line (Line 1 Extension): From Sihui station to Tuqiao station (visit the follow website for the timetable) Hot line Service: 010-6887 3399-5568 (Daytime) - 010-6887 3399-5543 (Night) Line 5: From Tiantongyuanbei station to Songjiazhuang station (visit the follow website for the timetable)

Subway: More important tips for subway travellers
Important information! When you take the subway you must of course buy your ticket. If you have a child with you he/she won’t need to buy one if your child heighs less than 1.1 meters (3.6 feet). Yes, you are absolutely right, in Europe is by age, not by eight (remember, this is a different world, a different culture, you shouldn’t judge if it is better or worse than the world you are used to live in, it is simply different). If you carry packages or luggages into the subway they shouldn’t be larger than 0.12 square meters (1.29 square feet), otherwise you will need to pay an additional ticket for them. Although bikes are very popular and you see them everywhere, don’t think you can take them into the subway. Besides, articles more than 1.8 meters (5.9 feet) long, large appliances like bicycles, washers, televisions, computer monitors, refrigerators, etc.), animals, grenades, atomic bombs and other strange stuff considered a danger to public health are simply prohibited (my advice is: abide by the rules, don’t try to be smart like you are in your country where you can easily fool the authorities, here is different).

A very pleasant surprise about traveling within Beijing and the rest of China is the quality of the local metro systems. Beijing's is relatively new and expanding at a stunning pace. This is probably quite necessary considering how the city is growing and the resulting traffic congestion. Furthermore the Olympics will be here in 2008 and Beijing will have many people from all over the world to move back and forth to each event. There are now four operational line but there will eventually be 15. The public transit system here is very cheap by Western standards. As in some European cities the cost of the fare depends on how far you a traveling along the the line. A minimum cost is just Y35 which is but 35 US cents. I did not see any machines dispensing tickets. I bought mine from a counter with relative ease. Each station is numbered so just point out the number you are going to on the map. The attendant will easily understand. The system itself is very clean and efficient. There are lots of English signs to you can navigate problem free. Also the upcoming station stops are announced both in Mandarin and English. My only beef with the metro system was that it is very crowded. I have also been told to watch your belongings closely. Even Beijing has pickpockets.

A way to get around is taking the subway for 3 RMB. When we were there I think there were three lines: Line 1, Line 13 and the loop line. We stayed at the Radisson SAS hotel and it was possible to take the subway from the hotel but it took about 15 minutes to walk to the nearest station (Liufang station on line 13). The subway is nice but the connections (e.g. from line 13 to loop line)was not all that great. I had to walk quite a bit and and you have to buy another ticket when you switch from one line to the other.

Subway: Line 13 Dongzhimen - Xizhimen
Above ground for most of it's length. Takes about 60 min to do a full one-way trip. Electronic Ticketing setup so if you are transfering from Line 2, you will need to change your transfer slip for an electronic tag for the gate machines to read.

    Subway: Easy Subway
Catching the Subway in Beijing is very easy. The subway route is very simple to understand. Catch it to the station nearest your destination and then catch a taxi or walk to your destination. That's a cheap way to do transport. There is English next to the Chinese signs, and also there is an English announcement on the subway. The subway is cheap, 3 RMB. It comes very regularly. I've had to wait only about 5 mins for each train. There is no air con, so be ready to sweat in Summer!
